Crystal Palace wakes up with a pounding headache and a pair of golden eyes staring at her above a cheshire smirk.
“So,” the man with flickering gold eyes drawls, “Welcome to Port Townsend, sweetheart."
Crystal rolls her eyes. “I’m not your sweetheart,” she says as she sits up with a groan, hand going to her side.
What the fuck happened to end her up here? And where even is here?
Crystal looks around, but finds absolutely nothing familiar about this place, about the concrete beneath her, about the ferry in the harbor next to her, about the bloom of pain in her side, scooping through her side to her stomach and her spleen like an unholy flower in an agonizing spring, about the man in front of her, with the entrancing mesh shirt on his chest and the skirt and the combat boots and the-
Fuck that. Crystal is not focusing on how hot someone is- no matter how hot they might be- when her body feels like it’s been cannibalized from the inside out, when she feels like she’s been chewed up and spat out, body, mind, and soul, when she feels like nothing more than a bleeding echo of a girl.

Summary
King is a famous name among the Underground. Everyone knows the devil himself and the way that he swans around in his stubbled legs beneath his skirts and his golden makeup above his leather dusters, making his bargains, sewing up his claims on souls.
But not everyone knows what he’s like when he’s bruised up, golden makeup smeared, letting out a groan as he hoists himself up in a back alley, spitting a glob of blood on the pavement in front of him.
Crystal Palace isn’t much better off herself. Even though there is something in her that is bruised, something in her that is built on shrapnel and a prayer, there is something in her that is too kind for her own good. Something in her that feels sorry for people who are wronged, even if said people are monsters in their own right.
What the hell- she’s a monster. She played partners-in-crime with David and gathered up her fair share of WANTED-poster-worthy crimes. She can name the blood stained beneath her painted fingernails, all those names that laced themselves around her neck like the executioner’s noose until the day she placed David’s pistol to the back of his head and pulled the goddamn trigger.
The devil’s got nothing on her.

Summary
“You know,” the King says, arms pinned behind his back as Lady Palace secures the rope- or, rather, the laces of her corset- around his wrists, “If you’d just told me that you wanted this, I would have been down. I know all too well that uptight girls like a little bit of rough play-”
He can hear the roll in her eyes as she says, “I’m far less uptight than you fucking think, Your Highness.”
She spits his title- not even his title, truly, considering the fact that he is a King and Your Highness is reserved for princes and princesses, not the one wearing the golden crown but rather the goddamn tiara- like it’s a slur, all mockery, all edge.
And the King would almost be amused by her attempt at being a fly in his ear- he has weathered far more creative kidnapping attempts than this- if it weren’t for the knife that presses to his neck. Things get a little bit more intense as the tip of the blade presses tight to his throat, drawing a single drop of blood from right underneath the outermost layer of skin.
(A bandit takes down a King, but neither one of them is exactly what they seem at first glance.)

“Come the fuck on,” Crystal swears, “Are you fucking with me? The woods are actually sacred? Don't tell me that burying David is the thing that fucked me, because I cannot go back to that life if I can't get rid of his body-”
The Cat King scoffs. “Oh fuck no, these woods aren't sacred.” He shudders. “Honestly, I hate them.” But then he fixes her with the curl of a smirk, eyes gleaming with curiosity. “But you, Crystal Palace? You fascinate me.”
Crystal bites her lip, tasting blood, but she doesn't wince. She doesn't flinch. She has done far worse on this eve, and she has a feeling that she'll bargain for far worse if she wants to get out of this in time to escape-
“Can you help me?” She asks, and she's not one to ask for help, but she needs to get out of this town in time. She needs to run, and run far, and never fucking look back.
“Not unless you make a deal with me, sweetheart,” the Cat King says.
(After hitting the end of the line on her relationship with David, Crystal is burying his body in the forest when she finds out that the local legends about the spirit that haunts the forest are real. What she's not expecting, though, is that spirit offering to help her out.)

Summary
Now, just because Crystal is dead doesn’t mean that she doesn’t have eyes.
Newbie is the kind of gorgeous that defies all gender norms, the sort of pretty that girls and boys would both kill to be and to kiss.
And yeah, he looks vaguely familiar, but most pretty boys do.
And Newbie beelines straight for Niko, where Niko has a fucking doggie bag ready for him, which can only contain-
“Niko!” Crystal hisses.
She can smell what's in the bag.
That's her food.
But newbie just winks at her.
“Don't worry, sweetheart,” he says, “I’m just here for a snack.”
(Crystal is a zombie mortician who eats the brains of victims to see their memories and solve their murders. She had to break up with her human boyfriend, Detective Charles Rowland, a year ago in order to keep him safe from turning.
But when a new man- a new zombie- enters the morgue, Crystal finds that she might have had more reasons than just life and death that her relationship with Charles didn’t work out. And maybe, just maybe, the new zombie might fill some of the hunger she’s been unable to quench since she died.)

It’s been at least a few centuries since they were worshipped at the altar, but while their true names are lost to time, they say that legends never truly die.
And as they walk the streets of one of the largest cities in the world, that grand shrine to consumption and consumerism and lust and glitter, it’s not like their cause to exist ever really went away, did it?
He wears a kilt and a shirt of glimmering mesh and a robe of flowers; she wears flower-painted boots and a pair of overalls above a white t-shirt and a long purple coat. Long ago, they wore their flowers as crowns dripping with blood above their brows; now they are merely a decoration, a stain from a life long ago.
(Crystal and Thomas are forgotten gods. They still have fun with it.)

He sees her like a mirage in the endless desert he’s currently driving through- the hitchhiker holding up her thumb to be picked up on the side of the road.
She doesn’t look like that much of a stranger- red curls half-pulled back, a purple crushed velvet jacket over a pair of jean shorts, tights, and a faded men’s shirt, earbuds in her ears. She looks the picture of studied nonchalance, as if she wouldn’t care one way or another if she got picked up by a passing car.
And yet there is something in her stance that betrays her hunger.
No- her need.
They’re in the middle of nowhere. She’s at least a couple of miles away from the nearest gas station, and all she has is her messenger bag. She might have a water bottle inside of that thing, but that’s not gonna get her too far.
And while Thomas is built a bit more impervious than most, humans very much are not.
Hitchhikers are a gold mine for what he hungers for- unending desire, a hunger for dreams and the road and getting out of town. Not just want, delicious as that is, but need.
(A siren picks up a hitchhiker on the road side, except, well- any liar can tell you that there's always more than meets the eye.)

“I’m the Cat Queen of Port Townsend,” the woman says, and it’s somehow both a casual thing and a declaration heavy with magical significance. Thomas can taste it on her words.
"And one of you is very much going to need to face a punishment," she says, but she seems rather bored by the whole endeavor, truly.
And Thomas wants to get her to react. He wants to earn something from her.
Thomas is lonely. He has something itching beneath his skin, carving a hollow out from within him.
Edwin is so stiff and uptight and clearly not onboard with the living. Charles is even more repressed than Edwin, whether he'd like to admit it or not.
And being lonely and empty and amnesiac and itching doesn't exactly improve a person's already tenuous self-control.
And so he blurts, like a reckless idiot with as much self-preservation as a bird landing right in front of a cat: “Why the fuck do you have a table of skeletons growing out of your floor?”
In an instant, the Queen’s gaze snaps to him.
“Y’know what?” the Queen asks, “I’m bored. Things around here get so incredibly mundane. But you? You’re fucking interesting. You’re going to come with me.”

Crystal knows that it’s a selfish thing, to want to go alone, and she’s been doing everything she can not to be selfish, but she wants this moment for herself. One chance to be alive.
When she’d left, Edwin and Charles and Niko had stepped through the mirror to have their own dance in the office, the three of them laughing together, and some part of Crystal had ached to be the only one going somewhere else. The only one alone tonight.
But when she steps into the school gym, completely alone, the bubbling sensations of life around her, able to be easily felt through her powers, there is something in her that revels in it.
Still, though—Crystal is alone, about to enter the spit-shined-wooden-gym-dance floor in her heeled boots, which might not have been the smartest decision for the evening—
“May I have this dance, sweetheart?” comes a familiar voice, and Crystal turns around, about ready to slap whoever the fuck thinks he can just start a conversation by calling her sweetheart—
But she stops when she sees exactly who it is.
(Crystal goes to prom, or: the final girl gets to feel alive with a surprise dance partner.)
