Well. Technically it hurt, somewhere in the back of Rei’s mind, but that had never bothered him before. “I think injuries are supposed to hurt,” he said, deadpan. That much should have been obvious. He’d shot himself in the arm just a few days ago, so of course it hurt.

He was cooperating for now, if only to save himself the pain of another fight. It seemed better to compromise and just put the damn costume on than to risk serious injury by resisting at this point. So he’d let Zhen Wuying march him to another room, which was laid out like a photo studio, and changed into the costume to keep the man happy. If he cooperated like this, he had a better chance of finding a way to escape than if he kept fighting with his captor.
Besides, Cheng Xiaoshi and Qiao Ling would know he was missing. They’d find him.

He should probably at least change clothes. People did that, right? Even when they were grieving. He opened his duffle bag, touched something soft and expensive, and abruptly realized he’d packed one of Kristoph’s sweaters. He pulled it out, staring at the tiny knit stitches in the delicate blue cashmere, and finally buried his face in it and cried.
His brother was never coming back. Would never see the error of his ways and be the brother that Klavier needed. There would never be some miracle turn where Kristoph was revealed to be working with the police to expose corruption, and the last few years had all been a lie.
