Summary
It doesn’t take long to start, the trembling. Mnemosurgery is a rather taxing profession, no matter how skilled you are or how long you hone your skills for. Despite being a job for the mind, it takes its toll on the entire body. They don’t find that out for many years after it’s already become a widespread practice.
So when it starts in Chromedome, he doesn’t think much of it. He confides in his new friend, a mech from the weapons division with a frightening personality and even more terrifying propensity to blow something up in your face, who offers to give his hands a look, but tells him it is not out of the ordinary in Chromedome’s line of work. Given the importance of Chromedome’s hands to his job, he declines the offer and decides he will get more sleep and try to take less autopsies.

Summary
The snow against Giyu’s bare skin is bitingly cold. His fingers are turning blue and have long since gone stiff, and his feet aren’t faring much better, trapped as they are in his soaked socks. His breath no longer clouds in front of his mouth as it once did, and the trembling across his body has shifted quite noticeably from being caused by the cold on his skin to being the cold in his muscles. He feels hot, like he’s burning all over, like that one time he was trying to help his sister cook and poured scalding water all down his arm.
No. no, he can’t think about her. He can’t. Thinking about Tsutako makes his feet still, and opens wider the pit in his chest, which is threatening constantly to swallow him whole.
It would be so easy to let it, and the promise of release is nearly enough for him to give in. But he cannot, because she wouldn’t want that, and she fought so hard for his life, she owes it to her to keep walking. To keep pushing, even if it’s getting harder and harder.

Summary
It’s cold. It’s worse than cold. Kai has been cold before, but this is something else. It feels like it’s inside him, this time, seeped into his bones. The hollow of his chest feels filled with ice, freezing him from the inside out. Without his fire, the snow is that much more biting.
He can’t say anything about it, though, can’t complain, because when he brought it up last, Jay shouted at him. Something about how they’re all cold and he needs to stop thinking about himself. So Kai is keeping his mouth shut. Afterall, he can’t know for certain whether the cold is really getting to him more than the others, or if he’s just not used to it. He remembers Nya telling him a few years ago that his body temperature is naturally higher than average, resting at one hundred, what would typically constitute a fever in someone else. So maybe that’s it. Maybe he feels colder because he’s normally warmer.

Summary
So when he comes back from his mission on Mount Kumotori, heart sluggish and fingers blue, he does not go to her. He goes straight back to his home, ordering Kanzaburo to tell Master Ubuyashiki that he will give his report on the mission tomorrow, he simply needs to rest first.
The Water Estate is cold and empty. There’s a futon on the floor and a kettle on the stove, nothing more. He does not want tea, and really he does not want to eat, though he knows he should.
Instead, he stumbles his way to sitting on the floor, leant against a wall. He tips his head back and shuts his eyes, breathing as deeply and slowly as he can.

Summary
Then he’s assigned to work with the Chainsaw Devil, or the boy it inhabits, the Blood Fiend, and the human in charge of them, Aki. They are obnoxious, and Aki is especially infuriating, as he is insistent that Angel changes his behavior and gets his work done as soon as it's assigned. They do not get along.
But at the same time, there’s something about him and his little pets, Denji and Power, that draws him in. They’re alluring. He wants to spend his time around them, for some reason. He follows Aki around, even if he spends most of that time just trying to piss him off, going with him to train, going with him to kill devils even when they aren’t strictly to go together.
Aki does not like him. He very explicitly tells him they do not get along and Aki can’t even pretend they do. He very clearly considers him a lazy, filthy devil, which, he isn’t exactly wrong about. Angel helps with the whole Bomb Devil thing, which is a terrible chore, and all is fine until the Typhoon Devil shows up.

Summary
He’s won again, but this is what he gets. All his effort, all his pain, just to burn. If he is to die, to fail, then he is to do it on the stage with a bullet in his neck. This is not that at all. This is not quick and painless, where you’re gone before you even hear the shot, this is slow and excruciating. His skin feels like it’s melting, and he can no longer see, not from shock but from pain. His vision is white.
Luka gasps, his lungs filling with horrid smoke even as a crew arrives to finally deal with the out of control flame. They douse them in water as Luka finally can’t keep himself up. Someone is running to him, as he falls, but he can’t focus on them. He wouldn’t want to anyway. Unless it’s her coming to get him, he doesn’t care, and he knows it can’t be, because he felt her heart stop against his own.
The hands on him make his wounds smart, but he’s barely in his body enough to feel it. He closes his eyes as they lift him onto something firm and carry him. He doesn’t see himself be dragged off the remains of the stage.

Summary
“It was a migraine,” Satoru says, swallowing thickly. “I feel like ‘m gonna puke. My head’s not right. My arms and- and legs are all tingly, but I- I don’t know. My mouth tastes funny.” Something is visibly dawning on Shoko, her face paling, dropping, and hardening all in one moment.
“Alright, Satoru, how ‘bout you sit down for a moment? Suguru is gonna call Yaga and he’s going to help us.” She gestures for Suguru to get his phone out, quickly. “Just sit down, Satoru. On the floor, or the couch. Come on. Please. Sit down.”
“I can’t,” Satoru cries, shaking his head rapidly. “It’s like- something bad is gonna happen but I don’t know what.” Suguru watches as his chest begins to heave as panic grips him.

Summary
Nya sees the scars by accident. It’s clear both by the way he reacts and how hard he’d tried to hide them that she was never meant to. Kai has always been like that, her whole life, for as long as she can remember. He hides things, it’s what he does. He buries and disguises his true feelings, and failing avoidance he resorts to anger. In short; he does not tell her or anyone else anything and does not do well with prying.
When Nya sees the scars, ugly burn scars that cover the back of Kai’s hands and continue up his forearms, she doesn’t really think anything. It’s like her brain stalls, like an engine. She hadn’t known he was in the bathroom, clearly having just gotten out of the shower, only a towel wrapped around his lower half, hair down around his shoulders, dripping. He gives her an affronted, shocked look, but she isn’t looking at his face. She’s looking at his arms.

2D, who had been holed up in his room with a migraine for most of the day, comes stumbling down the stairs. He’s got one hand on the wall and one on his head, unsteady.
“Muds,” he croaks. Murdoc doesn’t look up. “Muds.” He repeats, louder. Still nothing. “Muds!”
“Shuddup!” Murdoc finally shouts. “Take a pill and sit your arse down. I don’t wanna hear about your fuckin’ head.”
“I can’t take another,” 2D whines. He finally pulls away from the wall and wraps that arm around his middle instead, his other hand moving into his mouth. “I fink I took too many. Everything’s swimmy ‘n’ I dun’ feel good.”

Summary
They’re a few hours into watching TV when she notices that 2D is acting off. He keeps shifting like he can’t get comfortable, and he won’t look right at the TV anymore. He’s probably got a headache, but it must not be too bad if he’s still able to sit with them. Or, at least, she assumes so.
He makes some excuse about having to go to the bathroom, eventually. Noodle doesn’t question it, because why would she? Russel, though, watches him go, his face hard. He’s suspicious, but he looks away when he notices her watching him.
“What?” she asks. If Russel is concerned, there must be a reason. Russel doesn’t answer for a moment, his jaw working like he doesn’t know if he wants to share with her or not. He seems to make his decision when 2D isn’t back within a few more minutes, far longer than any bathroom trip should’ve occupied him.

Hawks has always wanted to be a hero. Even back when he was a boy with the name, it’s all he’s wanted. To make people smile, like Endeavor.
He’s given up everything, his home, his freedom, his name, all in the pursuit of helping others. And this is where it’s gotten him, Quirkless on the front lines of a war. It was never supposed to be like this. He’d rather die than have his wings taken from him. Dabi burning them had been terrible and painful, but there was the chance of recovery, or the chance of becoming something helpful again. Well, the fact he’s lying here now is proof enough of that.
He wishes All For One would’ve just killed him. Sure, he’s no use to anyone dead, but he wouldn’t have to suffer like this, either. It’s a selfish wish, but Hawks has spent his entire life doing nothing but giving without a second thought, perhaps he deserves a couple of selfish thoughts.

Summary
Winry lost her parents when she was really young. She’d been waiting for them to come home from her, perched on the porch every night until the sun went down, but what arrived in their place was the worst possible news. They were dead, killed in their medical tent, only trying to help people.
The grief tears her apart inside. She’s old enough to understand what it means that they are dead, that they are never coming home for her, and it hurts. It kills her. She can’t bring herself to get up and play for the first few days. Her grandmother tries to help, but there’s nothing she can say to ease this pain. Trisha, the mother of her best friends, offers an open ear, open arms, and all the comfort a mother can, but it isn’t right. It isn’t what she needs.
She needs her mother and her father to walk through her bedroom door and wrap her up in their arms. But they won’t, even if part of her wishes every night that they will.

Summary
He stumbles to his feet, wobbly like a fawn, and all but throws himself into the bathroom. Water, he needs water, to splash on his face and to drink, anything to get his body back under his control. Quick as he can, he turns the faucet on cold and splashes the water in his face. It doesn’t work immediately, though it is a shock. He looks up at the mirror, but it isn’t his face that looks back. Or, it is, for the most part, but there are very clearly features of Belos warping the structure of his face. He startles badly, thankfully caught between fight and flight so much so that he doesn’t swing at the mirror, which is his first instinct. Instead he falls back on his ass and scrambles against the tub, eyes wide open. His lungs have sure been kick started, but he’s gone from being unable to breathe to breathing far too quickly. He gasps, fingers twisting up into his hair. That writhing feeling in his skin grows worse, and he squeezes his eyes shut to prevent from seeing whether it’s real or not.

Summary
It becomes non-stop missions after the death of Riko. Yaga informs him that the Higher Ups want to make use of him now that mortal necessities do not bring him down. He cannot be felled by hunger or exhaustion, because Cursed Energy sustains all his systems. He’s perfect, now, a model Sorcerer. Even better than he once was. An opportunity like him doesn’t come ‘round all that often, they need to get their money’s worth.
So they send him on mission after mission, no breaks in between. He doesn’t see Suguru anymore, nor Shoko, which is a real shame, because for the time he’d gotten to know them, they’d made him feel seen like he never has before. He misses them, and their classes together, and even their teacher, strict and frustrating as he could be.
He misses life. He misses knowing what his own blood looked like, if only because it allowed him to think himself human. For all he knows it’s gold now, like a deity’s. That’s essentially all he is at this point, a God.

Summary
Genya can eat demons, and he isn’t nearly as shy about doing it as he maybe should be. So Muichiro is immediately concerned. It’s not exactly a habit the rest of the corps is aware of, even including the other Hashira, with the exception of Gyomei, and not for no reason.
Genya walks in the gray area between human and demon. The normal rules for either don’t apply to him, because perhaps he should technically be executed, but he’s human enough that the Master was willing to let it go.
But the other Hashira here does not know this, and his first instinct will of course be to kill the demon before him. He will think that Genya has turned and he will cut his head off and Genya will very probably die.

Summary
There’s a split second between the forceful release of his Technique and the impact of the blade in which a thought, one he has never had the need to feel before, jolts through his head with lightning speed; “I don’t wanna die.”
Nothing even close has ever come to him, no fear like this has he ever felt. A thousand scenarios roll through his head, his brain desperately attempting to find a way out of this, a way to keep himself alive, but there’s nothing. Absolutely nothing. Not a single thing that he can do quickly enough to salvage this mess.
The blade makes contact, ripping into the side of his throat and his shoulder. It’s dragged down to his hip, flaying him, rending his flesh. Blue fizzles at the tips of his fingers but the sparks lead to nothing.

Summary
So he sneaks off one night to some building he knows is abandoned. His first attempt fails because he does not have the willpower to drown himself.
Jumping off the roof, however, is something he cannot chicken out of once he’s done it. He stands there for a while, though, just on the edge, his arms bent backwards to hold on. The air is cold on his face. It makes his eyes water sharply.
He swallows against the fear of falling because he is still in control. His hands are the only thing keeping him up and if he wants to let go it’s because of him and not someone telling him what to do. He needs answers, and he isn’t going to find them any other way, clearly, since every test the Order has done has been clean.

Summary
He does get to teach, though! It’s nice to pass his training and ideas and skills onto the next generation, then watch them use it to do the things he wishes he could still do. Kai is technically not too old to fight, nor is he by any means weak, but he got benched a long time ago because of his stupid hands.
His Elemental Power had come with the drawback of leaving burns anywhere his fire touched his skin. Ugly, raised skin covers his hands, all the way up to his elbows. They’re not superficial, like he originally thought they were. For years he toughed out the pain and shaking until one day it ended up so debilitating he was nearly killed in a fight, and Nya pulled the plug. His hands had frozen, unable to curl his fingers or grip properly as they trembled, and thus had not been able to block a strike. Then another time the pain had been so blinding it took him to the floor in the middle of a battle, and from there he was completely benched.

Summary
But it isn’t all perfect. The noise he finds so fun and assuring can easily become too much for him. Sometimes the food is too rich or flavorful, something he never thought he would take issue with, and he can’t handle it. All the different textures can become far too much for him, and the choosing between them is overwhelming. Getting dressed in the morning requires a lot of thought and trying different shirts. Then there’s the actual noise. The sounds. There are so many here, and they tend to overlap and crescendo in a way which makes his skin crawl.
It doesn’t take much, here, to send him over the edge. This is incredibly inconvenient, especially since he doesn’t have his mask to hide behind or his duties to distract him.
He tries, he really, really does, but sometimes it just cannot be done. He’s reaching that point now, where he will be unable to keep from breaking down.
