Through several letters to his colleague in Thanatica, Bachelor Dankovsky describes his experiences in the town-on-Gorkhon in the post-epidemic days. From the local culture, people, and his struggles with figuring out what really happened, a certain local doctor keeps appearing more and more - Artemy Burakh.

Daniil Dankovsky arrives in the Town-on-Gorkhon with the intention of defeating death. After he meets his untimely end, he's offered a chance to do just that, time and time again. But the rules of the game have changed, and Death never plays fair.
Still, Daniil isn't one to give up without a fight. Even if it means dying a hundred times over in this cursed town.
He'll defeat the Sand Pest and Death once and for all, no matter how many attempts it takes, or what he has to sacrifice to achieve it.

It wasn’t as if Daniil had never heard of the affliction before, he had learned about it in university, had encountered it in some of the people around him, he wasn’t stupid, he knew exactly what this meant, but it wasn’t as though Daniil had ever had the illness himself. He had thought himself unable to catch the disease, and the fact that it simply had to happen, had to be in the worst circumstance, of course this was how horrible his luck was.
Daniil catches hanahaki on day 5, he does not deal with it well
