Apart from Tallulah feeling a little better, today is also the happiest Phil has seen Chayanne in a good while. Both Phil and Chayanne have been there during the long, quiet days, the ones they spend hanging out in the basement with a dreary Tallulah.
Phil has been doing his best to keep calm, stay collected, and make the most of the situation. He tells the kids stories of his travels to keep them entertained, and he cooks for them to the best of his ability; he makes jokes that send them into giggling fits and plays hide and seek with them in the basement’s flowers; he brushes Tallulah’s perpetually tangled, sleep-frazzled curls and dries Chayanne’s frustrated tears when he can’t manage to make his sister smile.
And every time Phil has to spend the wee hours of the morning holding a shaking child in his arms, whispering reassurances of nothing can get us here and promises of I won’t ever let anything happen to you until sheer exhaustion finally lulls them back to sleep—the silent anger inside him grows.
So, one night, he took that anger, and with it, he forged an axe.
