Summary
Krat is a city of tomorrow, where mechanical marvels are as common as grains of sand on our beaches. Plentiful as the goods we receive in its ports. We invite you, a watchmaker, engineer or dreamer. We have plenty of gold to share.
Come visit our gilded streets, enjoy the fruits of our labour.

He hadn’t seen Carlo for about a month. He wasn’t attending lessons, training sessions. Romeo wasn’t allowed to enter his father's home. He was hospitalised, he says now. Spent a couple weeks in nauseatingly sterile rooms, barely conscious on pain killers, his arm gone. Not giving signs of life. He is here now; Romeo reminds himself. Changed, tired, holding a hand of a child Romeo never saw in his life. He says it's his brother. One he either forgot to mention or was too painful to acknowledge. Weak blood, had to send the kid away to hopefully gain some strength. Romeo believes that. Maybe he shouldn’t, blinded like so many. Too focused on the flowers to see the thorns. Maybe the scent is buried too deep, maybe the thorns already infect his bones. He doesn’t mind anyway

Summary
The Hermit's Cave didn't offer the most comfortable accommodations, but it was a relatively safe place to rest and recover while the group planned their next move. The reprieve gave Romeo time to think, Carlo time to overthink, and P time to adjust to the dynamic developing between the three of them.
Romeo POV interlude taking place between chapters 7 and 8 of Beneath Some Happier Star; best read after chapter 8.

Romeo would have quite happily died there. He would have allowed his petrification disease to freeze him right there and then, pressed against Carlo and merging the two together. Instead, he lived.

Carlo had the most mesmerising hazel eyes that reminded Romeo of home. The puppet's eyes were blue, the same electric blue of the Ergo that flowed through both their bodies. -

Summary
“– Carlo?” He heard Romeo’s voice pierce through his thoughts, gunmetal blues having lost themselves in the sudden memory as he stared at the bowl of a familiar deep red drink. “Are you alright?” The king’s hand sought his own, thumb brushing against a knuckle with great care as he patiently waited for an answer.
“I… I remembered something.” The silveret breathed, eyes lighting up as brightly as the stars which had hung above...

Summary
The boy knew that Romeo, the King of Puppets, renewed body and all, had been an object of his affections. It was the same as him, for the blond, if those soft lingering gazes and lingering touches to his hand meant anything. He wasn't as dumb or as clueless as everyone made him out to be. In fact, he was rather perceptive.
So when he had awoken from this memory, heart in his chest hammering all the while, he knew the implications of it hadn’t exactly been innocent. The feelings and emotions were true, but the drive and desire shared between them had been– something else entirely.

Summary
A conversation with a Portrait of a Boy changes everything P thought he knew about his father, himself, and what it means to be a person.
-
Bookmark Notes:
She had pushed herself too far today, but she could not bring herself to regret it, even if she found herself bedbound tomorrow. P needed her now. This poor child had no one else, not even his so-called father. The indignity of denying him a proper name bothered her deeply, but who was she to say anything if the child did not demand for one of his own?
(...)
P faced her fully then, blue eyes shining in the lamplight, gold coins from branches overhead refracted upon his skin in ethereal patterns; his beautiful face was rendered uncommonly lovely against this backdrop, despite the grim setting and conversation. There could be beauty even in the depth of suffering; this boy was proof of that. Carrying himself with a quiet dignity, hiding countless unspoken horrors, he did not deserve the fate he was given — but then again, no one ever did.
