All the years have been long since Benjamin lost his job and his friends in one fell swoop, and he doesn’t even have the consolation of knowing he was in the right. It was too complicated a situation for that --- too entangled with hurt and jealousy and anger and betrayal, not enough *right* on either side to outweigh any of the *wrong* --- and so there is only the hollowness of a life without any of the things he’d once cared about and the stolen, guilty (probably undeserved) happiness of things he’d never hoped to obtain.
