An ordinary visit to a coffee shop turns Control’s life sweeter than if he were to add five cubes of sugar to his cup.
Control resurfaced from his reverie, and looked, still-dissociated, at the barista, then got utterly lost in his shiny blue eyes. Above them, he had thin brown hair with a fringe roundly plastered on his forehead, a bright, soft face with hollow cheeks and an innocent, almost puppy-like look to him. He smiled at Control, friendly. The barista wore a light blue shirt, a beige apron, but the strangest thing about him was a plaid brown tie, which seemed entirely impractical in his work environment.
The man had such a sweet aura to him that Control absolutely forgot about the entirety of the coffee shop - for a brief moment it was just him, this barista, and a rather small cup of coffee on the counter between them. The barista’s gaze was calming, gentle, but in that instant it was as if he had gazed Control right into the bottom of his soul, saw all through his life, and understood, in a very special and to Control unknown way. The barista’s rosy lips moved slowly, and words of indescribable beauty flowered from them…

Sometimes it seemed strange to Burnham, feeling that Airiam was beautiful. She suspected not everyone did, that they might see Michael as defective or faulty for feeling that way about someone–some thing–like that. She knew from the outside it was easy to forget Airiam had once been human, had once looked just like every other human aboard Discovery, but they only ever saw the augmentations the Commander couldn't hide beneath the trim navy and silver Starfleet uniform. They couldn't see the rest, the places where metal and machine fused into the organic remnants of a woman who had lost far more than just her life.

So, you’re reading DC comics and a government agency pops up that you’re reasonably sure doesn’t exist in the real world. Who are they? What’s their deal? Here’s a quick primer on some of the groups that you may encounter.
A few notes and disclaimers: This writeup is primarily based on post-Crisis, pre-New 52 canon. I’ve tried to note exceptions. Also, several of these stories use historical markers tied to the real world, which makes less sense as we get farther away in time from the original publication. DC eventually stopped using real people and events so frequently to address this problem, but I’m going to include the historical markers as depicted in the source material, even if that means the same Batman is supposed to have been active in the 70s and also in 2011. Just don’t worry about it.
Chapter 1 provides organizational histories and descriptions for the thirteen agencies tagged in this fic.
Chapter 2 places the histories into a timeline, to better help track how people moved between agencies and events unfolded.
