Between their debates, and Jens’ philosophy, and Alec’s lack of philosophy, and that glorious, unused smile – he loses himself. In these moments, he is not the operator Leamas. There is no Circus, no Control, no post-war Germany. In these moments, there is Alec and Jens and some unspoken bond which ties them together irrevocably. Alec is taken with Jens’ sadness, his conviction, his self-doubt and his beauty.
He does not think about it too much.
