Javert realises, with sickening clarity, what the sudden absence of Valjean and Marius means for a girl like Cosette in a city like Paris and how his own hand in it all condemns him. So he stays the night (as a police inspector, to ensure her safety).
But in a shameless city with no conscience for handling broken men and fatherless girls, that decision may unravel everything Javert ever believed.Javert/Cosette novel-length WIP.

Let him be free. Let the water wash away the curse inflicted on his soul. Let him die now, too tormented to wait in agony for a natural death, even if it meant the remainder of his soul would go to Lucifer’s domain. Let his eternal life be one of misery, as he deserved. Perhaps Valjean would meet him there, but Javert did not think it so.

Courfeyrac had attended a meeting with renewed interest for the first time in months, and not much had changed. Feuilly and Bahorel still tried to grope each other under the table when they thought no one was looking, Grantaire still drank anything he could get his hands on, and bickered loudly, and Marius looked completely terrified any time Enjolras or Combeferre looked his way.
Normal.
That wasn’t the issue. Courfeyrac could always do normal. He loved normal. The issue was that he had been cornered after the meeting by Musichetta who had locked the door after almost everyone who had left, Combeferre included, dragged away by Joly who insisted that they knew he hadn’t finished his forensics project, because he’d been complaining about it all month. He had.

Courfeyrac loses his shit, Grantaire and Jehan help him out, and Enjolras is just happy to be included. Combeferre is bad at feelings.
