    Summary

Normally, Sonny didn't answer invitations to gambling nights. Now, gambling nights with Sam Joseph at the Bellagio in Las Vegas were an exception. Sonny had known Sam for years and years. They'd met at the poker tables in Vegas when Sam was still a 20-year-old who had recently left his family's flour mill in Minnesota to pursue his talent in poker. Even then, Sonny had predicted that it wouldn't end well. Twenty years of Sam intermittently disappearing later, Sonny had a feeling it hadn't ended well as he reached to shake Sam's hand at the table Sam had picked inside the Bellagio. Unexpectedly, Sam pulled him into a one-arm hug, which was saying he was happy to see Sonny. His eyes, though, told the story of something having been irrevocably broken along the way. They sat down, opposite each other.

"I saw your winning race," said Sam. "It was one hell of a ride."

"Thanks, man," said Sonny. "I had one hell of a team."

"What's next for you?" asked Sam. "Another season with Apex?"

Sonny laughed. "It was a one-off really."

    "Shame," said Sam.

    Summary

Darkness had fallen over the remote farm somewhere in Washington State. This year, winter was being bitey and bitter. Splinters of white were flying around in the bruised bluish light of a late afternoon late in the winter. Inside the farmhouse, Sia was curled up on the couch, cocooned in a blanket and with Clemence the Border Collie in her lap–which made everything warmer and more relaxing. The dog, for one, had already fallen asleep. Sia was a couple of yawns and a fluttering of her eyelids away from sleep herself. Then, the doorbell rang.

Charlie sat down on the carpeted floor next to Sarah and hugged her waist with one arm. "What are you girls doing here?"

"We're creating a mural," replied Sarah.

Charlie leaned slightly back to get a better perspective of the work in progress. "I imagine you didn't choose charcoal?" he asked, chuckling.

The glass-and-wood doors leading to the balcony at Sam and Mariam's room had also been thrown open–by Sam. He was pacing the balcony with his new daughter in his arms. He kept turning back to look into the room at Mariam, who had been sleeping. Now she was starting to wake up.

    Summary

There had been no balls at the Joseph Estate since Natalie's passing, despite Sam's mother insisting that he take part in social life to find a well-made woman (“Do it for your kids, Sam,” Lady Clara Grace would say with a sigh). Anyway, Sam was perfectly happy staying in his corner with a flute of ice-cold champagne in hand. Bianca and Valerie apparently weren't similarly content because they insisted that he meet the new designer of their business, who was also an accomplished artist.

"You have something on your mind," said Natalie, the wind sweeping the front tufts of her hair into her mouth.

Sam turned to face her. "Just work stuff. I'm giving it my all, and I'm not really getting anything in return." He shook his head in frustration. "I'm thinking if I should go private."

Inside the manor house at the Estate, an ominous quiet had fallen. Over the course of Lady Natalie's labor with her and Sam's second child, which turned out to be a daughter, a lot of terrible things had happened. It had left Natalie weak.

"The horses are a lot of work," said Natalie.

"I don't mind," responded Sam, "I like the work."

"Have you worked with horses before?"

"I've worked with all kinds of animals."

"Okay. You should also know that I keep chickens."

"I don't mind chickens. My mother also kept chickens up north."

"Up north is a long way from here."

Sam chuckled. "It sure is, ma'am. I've been traveling for quite a while."

Natalie smiled, as if she was able to glimpse something. "I'm looking for someone who'd be willing to stay on the ranch."

    "Sure. It seems nice enough."

    Summary

In his old life, Charlie had a job. With his memory gone, he couldn't do his job–couldn't do much of anything, really. Except take walks with Sam and Rex on a running trail he apparently used to frequent with Rex. Sam and Rex–bless their hearts–were trying to get him to get invested in the new routine, but Charlie had little patience for establishing new routines. Today, Rex seemed to have had enough of Charlie's sulky attitude.

    Summary

It was the middle of the night. Sam was sleeping alone in his bed inside his rented house in Clarendon, Virginia. His sleep was fitful, and his worry for Mariam and their daughter, Valerie, would not let his mind rest. He kept seeing the two in dreams–some happy, some suspenseful, and others downright frightening. No matter how much he tossed and turned, the worry and longing would not leave him. Eventually, he came to the conclusion that he should probably start the day before sunrise.

    Summary

"What are you doing here?" asked Mariam, leaving the lamp at the center of the table. She ran a hand through his already disheveled blond hair while standing next to him.

Sam reached an arm around her waist and pulled her close. "I was just thinking," he said, smiling up at her.

Mariam smiled too, her thick, long lashes touching the top of her cheekbones as she continued to look down at Sam. She kissed the top of his head, then ruffled his hair more with her fingers playfully. Sam laughed.

"About how amazing a dad you will be?" Mariam asked him.

Sam chuckled, reaching for his glass of water. Mariam sat in his lap, and Sam ran his fingers through the he long, rich brown waves of her hair while she drank from the glass of water. The glass placed back on the table with the softest clink, Mariam squished her nose against his with that playful smile again.

    "I'm waiting," she said.

Sam thought a long kiss would work well to distract her–and him, for that matter.

    Summary

"Mommy!" shrieked a blonde-haired girl around the age of ten, launching herself at Mariam. All over the room, pieces of shiny pink fabric and dainty tulle were strewn about. "Look what Bianca gave me!" continued the girl. Then, she noticed Sam and made herself small against Mariam's waist.

Mariam stroked her hair. "Remember the friend I told you about, who was coming to see us?"

The girl nodded. "The one who knows dad?" she asked in Arabic–probably not knowing that Sam could understand the language.

"Yes," said Mariam, running her hands through blonde ringlets again, "my friend who knows dad." She said this in Arabic, too, having a faraway look in her eyes. At the tail end of the phrase, she turned and smiled at Sam.

He returned the smile, feeling somewhat stupid and as if he were intruding at the same time. He crouched down by Mariam's daughter in front of Mariam. He held his hand out and smiled. "Hi," he said in English, "I'm Sam. I'm an old friend of your mom's."

"Will you be dropping by the precinct?" asked Mariam, her brows furrowed in concern for their friend and neighbor.

Sarah sighed again. "Just to pick Rex up. I'm still on leave."

"Okay." Mariam knew when to press and when not to. Sarah was grateful for that. "We'll, of course, thank you and Rex with a steak dinner party. Things would be a lot different for the worse hadn't you two been there when I collapsed."

"It was all Rex," said Sarah, smiling with her eyes. "He knew something was up as he stepped into the house. I just made sure help was on the way."

"I owe you," said Sam. "A favor. You call it, I do it."

"Sam, please," said Sarah gently, "we've had this conversation before. You and Mariam have Valerie now."

"I think you're forgetting this is my safehouse, Joseph." They were past the stage where they addressed each other by surname, but he knew her enough to know Bianca was a stickler for the rules. "Besides," she continued, "officially, you're in Minnesota catching a breather from desk duties with your family."

"I'm not here," agreed Sam, fighting the urge to tease her with a lopsided grin.

"I'm serious," said Bianca. "If you need to be affectionate with Mariam, the time will come."

"For a second there, I'd thought you'd say not to turn the safehouse into a crime scene."

    Summary

"I think it was too little, too late for Charlie," she said, raising her head. Rex whined, raising his own head to look up at Sarah. Mariam stroked Sarah's back comfortingly.

"I'm not convinced," said Sam after a long stretch of silence. Rex cocked his head towards Sam.

Sarah looked at the former CIA officer and current high-end security consultant tiredly. "What do you mean? Mark saw Charlie take a bullet and fall into the water. I'd like to hold onto hope more than anything else, but I'm afraid hope doesn't seem to be on our side in this case." Sarah sighed. Rex grumbled in sadness.

"Listen," said Sam, scooting slightly closer to Sarah on the couch, "people take bullets and seem to drop off the face of the earth not exactly all the time but more so in certain circumstances than others. I don't mean any disrespect to your colleague Mark, but he's a former military operator, not a spy."

Sarah sighed again, brushing a hand over her forehead. Mariam looked at her husband sharply. "If you have an idea, Sam," said Mariam, "out with it."
