As he leant out of the window wincing at the inevitable paperwork if the new recruit was hurt on the first day on the job, he scanned the area and his eyes landed on an impossible sight. He froze, his whole being now completely focused on the figure down below. It couldn't be. Surely it must be a mistake.
The figure turned and their eyes locked. Chestnut brown to deep fathomless black.

Zhao Kunlun isn’t expecting to see a man that is a tad taller than him with deep, earnest brown eyes that are so dark they seem black. He isn’t expecting to be captivated by the soft lines that frame the Dixingren’s heart-shaped face nor the high cheekbones and subtle smile that make him look both demure and brazen.
As warm eyes settle on him, Zhao simply couldn’t have anticipated the slight blush that blossoms on the Dixingren’s cheeks under his steady gaze. Nor could he predict the swooping feeling in his own gut along with this deep embodied desire. It’s a longing for something he never knew he wanted nor believed he could have.

Shen Wei senses Zhao Yunlan’s inhale before he hears his sigh, before he feels Zhao Yunlan move, and Shen Wei silently shifts his leg away as Zhao Yunlan stretches forward to pick up another case file. If Zhao Yunlan looks over at him, Shen Wei keeps his gaze trained on the file in his hands and doesn’t see it.
“Cause of death records,” Zhao Yunlan says as he flips the case file open, the same way he’d said acid composition notes for the last one, and trident wound autopsies for the one before that. Shen Wei hears him tuck his lollipop into his cheek, the click of it against his teeth. “It’s from ten years ago, I’m surprised it was allowed to lapse. My old man would’ve still been in charge then.”
Or: A week after Shen Wei restores Zhao Yunlan's eyesight, the SID uncovers a new lead to an old case.

So powerful, in fact, that Haixin sees no better way to appease them than volunteering a hostage. The Warlords, however, do something no one expected them to: they take the hostage as their spouse.
Zhao Yunlan never expected his life to take such a turn, but he is nothing if not good at rolling with his punches.
