In the time since Duncan and Amos left the Circle Tower, they had made little progress. At midafternoon on the first day, when Duncan stopped them to pull out his well-worn map and remind himself of their journey, the distance between the tower and their current location was the size of Amos's thumbnail. He decided, over the next three days, that he hated travelling. His feet ached. His brow was beaded with sweat. His stomach turned over, in part because he was unused to eating as little as he had eaten in the past few days, and in part because he was still scarred after the events that had taken place at the Circle. He spent most of every day waiting for the moment that Duncan told him it was time to settle down for the night, but even when Duncan made camp and prepared the campfire, Amos felt nervous and unsettled. The woods around them were dark, the air was cold, and he felt at all times like he was about to be attacked and had no idea how he would fight back against his would-be attackers.
How is it that he felt more like a caged animal in the wilderness than he did in a prison?
