“If I told you it would ruin everything,” Charles said, though his actions betrayed his words, leaning in closer to Erik until his head was on Erik’s shoulder. It was a perfect position for being close but not having to look each other in the eye. “It would change everything between us.”
“Do you really think so?” Erik asked, “Because I don’t think there’s anything that could separate us. We’ve been through so much together, and I can’t see anything you say changing that now. Try me, try our relationship and just say it.”
That said, he still couldn’t predict what Charles was about to tell him, “I’m in love with you,” The words were quiet, no more than a mumble and Erik felt himself tense up.

Apocalypse has a vision, and he will do anything to make sure that his horsemen are loyal to him. He is not above lying about his motives. Upon meeting and recruiting Erik, he learns of Erik's relationship with Charles.
Erik was told that Charles was only needed to send the message. He was told that Charles would not be harmed in any way. That was a lie, and once Erik learns of that, he realizes that he values Charles more than anything, and his loyalties change in a heartbeat.

He had no possessions and no real place to call home. Well, that wasn’t entirely true. There was a pace that he could call home, a place with someone he called home, more accurately.
But he was out on his own now. In the cold. It had been years since he had been so cold and Erik didn’t want to think about those times and conditions.
What he should’ve done was found a hotel for the night, used his powers to float up to a window, open it and then move inside to spend his night illegally. But he had foolishly brought himself to believe that it wouldn’t be too cold and now, here he was, curled around himself, shivering under his cape that he was using as a blanket.

Charles was clearly teasing Erik, but at the same time, that was a bit of a factor in his decision. Charles was only twenty-seven, and Erik was forty-two. Fifteen years wasn’t nothing and definitely something they should consider, but it wasn’t the only thing stopping Erik from giving in.

“What was that?” Erik asked back, trying to replace the hurt with anger—something easier to feel, something more familiar.
“What?” Charles asked, looking over at Erik, the confusion clear, not just in his voice but on his face too.
"I thought we were dating but you-you were all over her,” Erik said, staring back at Charles, his face set, fighting back the emotions. The man was a genius but Erik was beginning to think that was a lie.
“We're not dating..." Charles replied, his voice slow. It almost sounded like he was trying to explain something to a child. Or, maybe, trying to figure out how Erik would’ve come to that conclusion in the first place.
Erik blinked, staring at Charles. He wasn’t sure how to respond to that. Of all the things Charles could’ve said, that was one that never entered Erik’s mind as a possibility. “Oh.” He finally said, rather dumbly.
