Summary
When they landed in their next world, Mokona’s fur went up higher than a spooked cat’s. All the chic mid-century modern designs in the world could not save it. What should have been a charming town was reduced to bold geometric forms with an utilitarian aesthetic. Under any other circumstances, he might have liked a quiet weekend here with Fai, but Mokona’s bizarre reaction was a complete and utter first that was enough for Kurogane to turn them around and head for the nearest exit.
This was how they learned the town’s accursed name:

Kurogane, in the course of a standard investigation, bumps into Fai, a foreigner on his own work visa in Japan. He's not magic, despite Kurogane's best attempts at figuring that out, so it's a bit awkward when he falls face first into love and has to figure out how to tell him.

“What’s the last thing you remember?” asked the man who’d approached. Because he had approached, gifted a drink, to replace the one the stunning man had finished. He remembered that much. There was a long moment while the attractive man thought. Then he shook his head.“Who are you?” he replied instead of answering.
The first man now had his own turn to think. He’d come over here to flirt, because this man was cute, with interesting eyes and broad shoulders. Before this, there’d been… blood? And flutters of blue and gold? What did that mean? A gold haze floated the worry away.
“Someone who’s interested in knowing you better,” he deflected, his voice dropping into a smooth glide that felt natural. The handsome man’s ears were visible, behind the edge of his mask, and not covered by his black spiky hair. At his words, those ears tinged a dusky red. Oh, that was fascinating. He smiled wider. “What about you?”

“We humbly present ourselves, princes of Valeria, by your request, Uncle.” It was Fai who broke the silence with a voice small, but steady. Their heads remained low while the king surveyed them, as if turning over the words for hidden meaning. When he bid them to rise with a wave, his gaze was so intense that it seemed to glow in the firelight. Yui knotted his free hand into his cloak, desperately trying to hide his inability to sit still, and Fai gave a reassuring squeeze between the folds.
“Your presence is noted.” The king clapped, and the fires flared in response while the door locked with an audible grinding. “This court is now in session.”
