Summary
When the time comes for Hob to start his next life - Dream makes him an offer - to shape his form into that of a much younger man, (a twenty-two year old, to be precise) so he can have more time in the next iteration of himself.
Hob accepts and proceeds to be very horny about it, especially when he realizes Dream is altering his own form to appear a little older, a little more experienced, a little more distinguished.
(Then they are both very horny about this development.)

When the dreaded Nightmare King demands the knight Hob for his consort as part of the treaty that ends the bloody war between the Dream Realm and the mortal kingdom to which Hob is sworn, he is shocked, dismayed, angry, and more than a bit afraid. Hob has died several times at the hands and claws of the Nightmares, and one already at the end of the Dream King's own sword. Months after re-appearing to Hob, Dream still hasn't told Hob where he's been the last century. He's been doing a half-decent job of actually pretending nothing *too* terrible happened! He was doing a half-decent job until he *wasn't*, anyway.
OR: Dream is always cold, and trying to numb and wall off the trauma. Hob gifts him a sweater, and the dam breaks. Repeatedly, as it turns out.

His friend had seemed a bit more pensive and more open, a little tired – had offered a few details on managing an entire realm, that had to be hard on anyone – and Hob hadn't pressed on why he'd missed the meeting in 1989. Dream had said only that he had not meant to miss it, that Hob bore no blame for it. Now he thinks something clearly happened. Perhaps there are bad things still happening. Hob mentally kicks himself for not noticing sooner. A dam of some kind has clearly broken.

With the stalemate, it looks like he will be stuck there for a long time, until one day when Dream is woken by an intense bought of nausea. It seems he's not the only one trapped in Burgess' basement.

When the only lights in the basement are the cold, beetle-like eyes of the guards watching him, the glass turns to water in his mind, the water that of his own realm. His reflection in the orb around him is just him looking into the waters of the Dreaming, the eyes of his captors the glittering masses of unconsciousness writhing gloriously beneath. Perhaps the sigils burnt into the ground in gold are the trim of his robes around him.
The Lord of the Dreaming does not dream the same way we do. Still, in captivity, it becomes remarkably similar. When he is put in the dark basement, he has no way of knowing that across the continents, Hob Gadling stops dreaming entirely.
Hob Gadling starts to dream decades later in flashes of glass, eyes, and runes emblazoned on cement floors. He does not know what it means - the only thing he knows are those eyes, twin north stars, calling out across any distance. He is falling in love with dreams and memories, with someone who cannot see or feel him. He has no way of knowing if his dreams are real- only faith drives him forwards. Hob Gadling is falling in love inside of his head.

She had concepts for her book after all of her experiences but it wouldn’t hurt to learn the more about the craft as she put pen to paper. Plus who knows, she might make some friends who haven't been scarred by a serial killer and a not-really god.
