    Ashlynn turned to look at Briar, confused, whose face had darkened. She suddenly looked much older; her eyes had dimmed, and Ashlynn felt as if she was looking at a completely different person. 

    "What ?"

    "That we are just that: our next parents. You are the next Cinderella, and I'm the next Sleeping Beauty. It's sad that we can't just be Briar and Ashlynn."

    There was nothing that felt like a good response to that, so Ashlynn just looked at her friend. Could she also not want to sign ? And somehow that idea didn't make her as excited as Raven's question did. What Briar said felt like defeat, like there was no changing that. And suddenly Ashlynn felt hopeless again; one singular question wouldn't change centuries of history. 

    Briar was right; they were nothing more than their future selves, a repeat of an already existing story.
