"I thought we were past that," Granby added after a moment. "I thought..."
"That he had recovered from being a traitor to his country? That he was ready to die, but now he is being sent to the other side of the world when Temeraire is needed here?" Tharkay asked, turning his head towards him and raising an eyebrow.
Granby scratched his hair. "I suppose I was hoping."
"But you did not think so," Tharkay pointed out, and when the captain gave him a puzzled look, he added, "Otherwise you would not be here."

The journey to Australia is a long one, and after the treason and a never-executed death sentence, Laurence finally has time to deal with the events of the last few months. But he cannot always do it alone – luckily he has plenty of people and dragons around him to find him whenever he gets lost too deep in the fog.

Summary
Tenzing Tharkay, John Granby and William Laurence are enjoying a domestic life in the states. Laurence is making sure no one burns the house down, Granby gets them to laugh and Tharkay does his best to keep this disaster family, they have found in one another, alive.
Everything is bliss until Granby and Tharkay have to realize that there are certain things they have not been told about and Laurence suddenly running short on shallow graves to bury his past. -

Granby first notices late one night at the covert in Dover. They are lying in Little’s bed, mostly rid of their clothes, taking advantage of a quiet night to steal away together, only it seems to Granby that Little isn’t taking much advantage. Rather, Little has been staring into space for several minutes, a deep furrow between his brows, the way he looks when he’s contemplating serious matters.
“Augustine?” Granby asks, turning to his side to face Little—always a precarious endeavor, as it either leaves him resting on his stump or without a free arm to help balance. “Is something the matter? You look miles away.”
Little visibly shakes himself. “It is nothing, I am still stuck on today’s maneuvers, it seems. Forgive me.”
Little is acting a bit shifty. Luckily for Granby, he's got their best interests at heart.

Local dragons run an experiment called: Dragon See, Dragon Do (only not everything their humans do is fit for their attempts)
OR: Granby and Little are just trying to find their place in a post-war world. In the background (and don't think too hard about this), Temeraire and Iskierka run some experiments, try to get along as best they can, and accidentally introduce their humans to the concept of polyamory. Also, Immortalis is there too, but he's much more dignified about this whole mess.
