Summary
It would be nice if his body were to cooperate with him today. Martin will be home within the hour, and he needs to at the very least get his cake into the oven. He should have by now, but everything is just slow nowadays. The cane is becoming almost second nature, but not to the extent that he could simply move as he once had. It feels almost petty to complain – he is alive, after all – but when another fiery signal travels up and around, a hot flash spreading through his limbs in a dreadful wave, whatever energy he had left to dedicate towards gratitude burns up right along with it.
It continues this way for a while, his cane clicking across the tile as he gathers what he needs, lining them up along the counter. By the time that's done, he's already so damn tired. He probably shouldn’t have spent so much time tidying their room first, but it would have eaten at him otherwise. He wanted as few distractions as possible from Martin’s birthday, but he may very well have given himself a new one.

Summary
Jon turns the page in his book, but the words have become nothing but an incomprehensible wall of ink. He just can't silence the thoughts today. Too many little voices chattering in his head.
Some are harmless; a few debating on whether he would like to go out with Martin to the shops tomorrow. What he might need to restock in their little kitchen. They’re low on cinnamon, he recalls. The little cabin smells so wonderful when Martin bakes them sweets, so he would like to keep the kitchen well stocked.
Other thoughts, on the other hand, are…more disconcerting. Little doubts that spring up from the muck and bile deep within his gut, reminding him of all the terrible things he should be deathly concerned for. Of just how terrible their situation truly is. This isn’t freedom. They’re only delaying the inevitable.
It's nearly silent in their home, and yet everything is far too loud.
