This will deviate a lot from the original plot since Babel that we know and love is going to be referred as a 'whitewashed account of what truly happened'. and yes, our boy Robin is very much alive and kicking. I would like to add tws; sa, abuse, child abuse, neglect, violence, oppression, slavery, non-accurate account of history.
While I am working on the first chapter, I'm not sure how long I want this to be. It'll be told like a journal or very much like how you would read somebody's journal; the flow of thought jumping from one point to another. expect robin to sound more pissy and loads of ramy and robin moments :DDDD.

The Chinese character ài (爱) carries the English meaning of “to love or to be fond of.” It’s not much different from its English counterpart: it’s what a father tells to his son, his wife. Or so Robin has been told.
But there was one thing that confused little Robin. The Chinese character for friend (友) was always present in ài. No matter what era of documents he scoured through, there wasn’t a single instance where ài lost its friend.
So perhaps he never learned the distinction between “friend” and “love.” Perhaps he had intertwined the two concepts in his mind so deeply it had, unbeknownst to him, changed the way he viewed his world. So much so that when he was presented with a friend, he thought it was love.
Or perhaps his feelings for that brown eyed boy were genuine. Perhaps the only reason he thought it was a friendship was because he was merely confused by the intricacies of language. It wouldn’t be the first time it had occurred.
He would die without an answer, left only with a feeling so intense it would follow him past his final breath.

“What? Then who do you fancy?” Robin seemed scared to ask the question.
Ramy extended his arm again, his palm facing the ceiling, asking for Robin’s hand. “Why don’t you come find out?”

Basically, what if Victoire knew? About Ramy and Robin? And on the night of the ball, she helps them find time and space by themselves to dance with one another? This is in Victoire's limited pov, so keep that in mind :)

The building begins to fall around Robin at a violent pace. He’s gripping the silver bar tightly now. It won’t be long. The floor is shaking, the roof is falling, and he thinks of that happy place of his, that memory, and then he desperately whispers the words engraved on the bar—
Nothingness. For an instant, there is absolute nothingness.
And then—
Robin opens his eyes. For a moment, he wonders if he’s made it to the afterlife. He’s on that hill again, and next to him is the picnic basket. He could smell the cheese laid out next to the chocolate that he and Ramy had spent too much of their money on. His eyes begin to water at the sight.
