“Where is she?!,” Kamilah demanded as she burst into the curtained hospital cubicle opposite the nurses station where Lily, Jax, and Adrian were sitting against the back wall with so much ferocity she almost tore the curtain from its overhead tracks. There was no gurney in the centre of the small space. No sign of her Annie anywhere— no sign of her mortal beyond her cellphone in Lily’s hand and the scent of her sweet blood lingering in the air.
Her not being there only worsened her panic.
If something had happened and she had not been there— Or nobody had thought to Turn her— She’d behead everyone who’d stood by and allowed it to happen before hurling herself into the midday sun.

“I don’t even know why I questioned it!,” she laughed, resting her brow against hers as her eyes watered. “You’re bloody psychic and— god. I can’t believe it. Twins!”
Anastasia smiled and brushed her cheek with her thumb. She’d been doing that to her since the beginning of them. She’d done it the first time she ever kissed her. She loved the gesture.

The city was crawling with mortal holiday shoppers looking to add to their already burgeoning piles of gifts. To Kamilah they were like ants at a picnic, teeming from store to store, trailing oversized carrier bags and screaming infants and bored husbands behind them as they went. She felt alien in this environment; pulling up her hood to protect her hair from the snow as they strolled hand in hand through the jittering crowds on Fifth Avenue, dodging pushchairs, lit cigarettes, and charity collection tins offered by drunken mortals dressed like Santa on every street corner. The approaching holidays seemed to wave a magic wand over the world, everything was softer and more beautiful... and less irritating than it otherwise would be. Later in the winter she’d tire of the snow, but Dark Solstice snow was different — the Dark Solstice was a state of mind, after all.
