Carl's hand pawed at his gun holster, but it came up empty. His head snapped down in surprise, did he drop it while running? Was it maybe on the forest floor? How did he even get here?
He fell to his knees and ran his hands through the grass, his frantic searching tearing up clumps of dirt.
The snap of a branch startled him and his eye scanned the surrounding forest. He made his way into a crouch and kept his gaze in front of him. His gun wasn't here and his knife was god knows where, he was useless, injured, and alone without a weapon. Another branch cracked closer this time, and as he was backing away a small throwing knife whipped past his face, missing him by a mere centimetre. Carl took this as his sign to bolt. He turned and sprinted as fast as his sore legs could take him, being careful to not trip on any roots or rocks this time.
