Jesper wants to have kids, adopted or otherwise. Wylan wants kids too, except he’s not sure he wants another child – much less his child – to be burdened with having to carry around the name Van Eck.
The same Van Eck who not only purposely got his wife and Wylan’s mother taken away just so he didn’t have to deal with her failure in Wylan, but also got Wylan’s best friends Kaz and Inej’s son killed for revenge. A fact that Wylan feels was meant to hurt him as well as his friends.

A bolt of white and brown shot inside, yipping loudly to announce his presence. Frans, the long deceased Butcher’s Blade of the Barrel, must be waiting with his spectral pup’s dinner by now after all. The current shop owner shut all the windows and grates to keep out the chill, so it was up to Kaz to let Kipper in each day. Sometimes he lingered longer to give Kipper a good scratch behind the ears, but he was behind schedule already."
