In the summer of 1899, David Jacob's father gets injured on the job leaving him and his brother to get jobs. David and Les are met with one of the largest packs in New York City, the Manhattan Newsboys. Meeting the pack alpha and selling with him is not what he had planned, neither was starting a strike. But here he was. Heartbreak and love will drag our boys through a rollercoaster of emotions.

“Jack-” David started, his earlier resolve crumbling quickly in the midst of all that silence and the way Jack’s breaths puffed out steadily beside him. He felt so small, minuscule, that he felt like were he to confess anything in that moment, it would cause no wide disruptions, no consequences, just a simple statement of fact, as gentle as an autumn leaf falling from a tree.
Spoilers:
Davey's in a coma where he repeats the same day. It's both a frustrating time loop that he doesn't know how to break out of and also a nearly perfect fantasy world his subconscious came up with. Being in love with Jack in both reality and his dreams doesn't help either.

Summary
When Spot Conlon travels 45 minutes to be a farmhand for three months, his goal is to make enough money to help his family with rent in the city. What isn’t his goal, but certainly a perk, is finding his way in the Jacobs’ family, even if that requires a bit of misfortune on Mayer’s part.
In other words, Spot is a farmhand on the Jacobs’ farm. Modern AU without the pandemic
