Summary
Jack Kelly was afraid of a lot of things.
He was afraid that winter would come early, sending a chill through the lodge that would spread illness and hunger. He was afraid he and Racetrack wouldn’t be able to get enough gloves and hats and scarves and boots to keep the boys warm. He was afraid he would never get away to Santa Fe and its vast, open spaces. He was afraid of the Spider. And the Refuge. And how it would break his boys if they were taken. How it was probably breaking Crutchie now.
He was afraid he would break, if the blows didn’t stop soon.
Maybe that’s why he took the deal.
In which Davey learns why Jack took Pulitzer's deal, and what he had to endure in the meantime.

Summary
David had foolishly believed that Jack had forgotten about Santa Fe. That he would stay. That David was enough for him to stay. He was wrong.
It had been months since the end of the strike. Christmas had came and went, and David really thought Jack had been happy. He had came around for the holidays, celebrated with them even. Perhaps David should have seen it, that look in Jack’s eyes when they all celebrated, that far off look.

It's a wonder why Davey didn't notice right away, but admittedly he was a little preoccupied with organizing a strike. He hadn't had any time to think about it. But now that things have calmed down, he notices it. A pack bond. A partial one, at least. Over the last few stressful days, the Newsies have been patting his back, ruffling his hair, nuzzling and scenting him. So Davey had a partial bond with one of the biggest packs in the city.
