Niki laughs and it is a painful, hiccupping thing. Her vision blurs and she lifts her hand through the hollow image of Wilbur’s arm to hover at the vague approximation of his cheek. Blank eyes widen as they look down at her and the angle of Wilbur’s head tilts as if to better feel her touch. “Someday,” she tells him. “Someday Wil, I’ll make it so we can be like this forever.”
Her tail flickers at the thought, sending water flinging across the fibrous rays of her fin before curling tighter around Wilbur’s translucent form. The pattern of rainfall is beginning to slow and it makes her fingers tremble with the knowledge of the inevitable.

The initial light was blinding. Tommy blinked rapidly, before sitting up in a hurry. What the hell…
He was on the banks of a smooth lake, in the middle of a forest clearing. The grass felt soft beneath his hands. Above him, somewhere hidden amongst the trees, a bird chirped. But something was off.
Tommy scrambled to get up. Correction: he attempted to get up, as he barely had a chance to look around before a foreign weight on his shoulders nearly made him tip over.
