Summary
During their year apart, Marion has often imagined what Sean’s face would look like - in a response to a crude joke of one of the other soldiers, or lit up by the low fire, sitting next to him, bumping their shoulders together every once in a while. Marion imagined it and each time his heart ached a little with the heaviness that crashed down on him as he remembered Sean wasn’t going to be there when he looked to his side.
During their year apart, Sean had often heard Marion’s voice - a shout commanding him to run faster, a soft whisper of “It’s okay” even though it was not. He had heard Marion’s voice and he dug his fingers mercilessly into the soft flesh of his neck, hating every moment of lightness Marion’s words had brought him.

The smartest thing, he knows, would be to get to Jean. Jean and her doctor’s bag, Jean and her steady, gloved hands. I’m sorry, Mr. Finnerty, I know, I’m sorry, in her soothing voice, and he would be so good and wouldn’t scream, not even with her sterile forceps digging the bullet out of his destroyed flesh.
With any luck, Marion would be there too. Marion, who’d hold his hand, make a joke about peeing on the wound, laugh even with tears filling his big, brown eyes, watching his best friend bleed out on the kitchen table.
He knows where Jean’s place is. The Sidle’s not far. He could get there. That would be the smart thing to do.
No one’s ever accused Sean Finnerty of being a smart man.

Yes sir, yes ma’am, reporting for duty. Whatever you did in the last year, Sean Finnerty, they must have been better deeds than all twenty-two years before that; watch yourself, since you’ll never be able to replicate them.
Not Jean, whose strength was her mind, whose whole world went ass over bayonet these past few months, unrecognizable from the last thing she remembered. They couldn’t hold her now. “She’s got to do it on her own,” Sean sighed. “She can handle it.”
Marion spoke so quietly that Sean felt the words through his back more than he heard them. “What if it never comes back to her?”

Jean was too engrossed in the ruin of a man they had put on her table. She didn’t realize the soldier was talking to her until he grabbed her shoulder.
She tore her eyes away from a cratered thoracic cavity to look at the living soldier beside her. He was young, a boy really, covered in sweat and filth, with pale tear tracks down his face. He had the dead man’s blood all over the front of his uniform, and probably also on the hand that was touching Jean.
The field hospital was half a mile from the current front line. How much of that distance had he carried the dead man, before he found a stretcher?
“Doc,” said the boy, eyes wide. “Fix him, please.”
