Summary
Laurent found it slightly offensive that his brother seemed to think he was stupid. Because, honestly, if he was confident about one thing it was his brain power. Which Auguste seemed to either ignore or massively underestimate.
At the same time he understood why his brother acted the way he acted. It couldn’t be easy for him. He had always been less aware of his own feelings than Laurent. Dealing with them by overpainting unpleasant ones with layers and layers of distractions. Laurent, on the other hand, never had the benefit of choosing what he wanted to feel. His emotions were so loud and his brain so determined to pick them apart into their smallest parts, prodding at every little thing until it hurt, that he had to deal with them one way or another.
All of this led to the not so surprising fact that Laurent knew what was going on, had known for years by then, while Auguste still struggled with making sense of the situation. Although at this point it was more wilfully ignoring the facts. Which were piling up into a mountain of undeniable evidence in favour of Laurent’s theory.- Language:
