It had been some time since my most recent bearer was so distressed as to catch my attention, although few things could compare to a demon calling down the moon. In the passing years, his life had been only punctuated twice enough to pull me from the dream in which I slept: twice, and both times I was too far from him to reach out to help.
This time, he reached out to me and I answered without question.
The first sensation was pain; it twisted in my stomach like a knife, and I doubled over with a hoarse cry. Not again, I prayed, and forced myself to think of anything else. The pain faded slowly, and someone next to me spoke under her breath.
