It’s the fourth of July.
Or, rather, it’s still the fourth of July in the United States, which is where they live, but they’re in Madrid at the moment, so technically where they are it’s the fifth. It’s not hard math to figure out what time it is back home— it’s a little before six in the morning here, so it’ll be a little before midnight in New York. Somewhere on the West Coast or in the Rocky Mountains, though, there are fireworks going off.
That’s what Near is thinking when Mello kisses her for the first time.

The tile floor of the bathroom is freezing through the wool of her socks as Mello squeezes toothpaste onto the bristles of her brush. She always forgets how goddamn cold this place gets during the winter— old building, bad insulation. Shitty furnace, too. There are goosebumps all up and down her limbs. A tank and a pair of sweatpants might not have been the best thing to sleep in.
Then again, not all the goosebumps are from the chill, and her choice of attire is hardly the stupidest mistake she made last night.
