“Satisfied?” Light grumbles into the phone, shutting his laptop with a soft click, and padding his way over to his bathroom. As he stands, L’s gentle voice crackles over the speaker.
“No, never.”
“Predicatable,” he snuffs, running his toothbrush under the tapwater, “So, then, what would keep you satisfied? If anything.”
There’s shuffling on L’s end, before he says, fluid, like a paintbrush over wood, all too easy, like it’s the easiest thing in the world, “You.”
The Kira case wanes in 2004, and eventually goes cold. L departs from Japan, and five years go by. Until, one night in 2009, L tells Light that the Kira case is being reopened, and L wants to help acquit him before he is inevitably caught. But, like always, there is a catch that comes with L's favour, and now Light is stuck playing teacher in a house full of genius orphans while mending the rift that had blossomed between himself and L.

Mello still remembers the time when the collar in Near’s shirt had been twisted, and, without thinking, she reached to fix it, her fingertips grazing the warm skin of her neck. Mello had felt Near’s eyes on her the whole day, and her own hand burned until the next.
But Near's hair is something out of her reach; there’s almost no excuse for her to touch it, and the request is weird itself. Her pride works as a break, a halt in her intent of embarrassing herself by even asking in the first place. Because Mello knows very well that if she ever starts, she may never stop.
Sometimes, she really doesn’t trust herself. But Near does.
Maybe Mello isn’t the stupid one out of the two.

and maybe he would be able to wait until the day’s end except Gevanni keeps getting all up-close to Near to show him stuff, and Mello is beginning to vividly imagine fucking Near on the floor next to his bloodied corpse, which is an indication that the issue has gotten fairly severe.

It is in the interest of his own health and everyone else’s safety that Mello makes the choice he does. It’s a little underhanded to put an urgent one-on-one meeting request on Near’s calendar in the singular conference room approved for discussion of classified information, but these are desperate times.

Summary
Two years after the end of the Kira investigation, Near reluctantly agrees to investigate a series of murders in Denver. What he's expecting is a dull, uninteresting case that he'll solve before the plane has even landed. Instead, he gets a killer who seems to have no rhyme or reason to their actions yet somehow evades capture anyway and still has time to send him cryptic messages with horrible grammar.
Mello has been lying low for the past two years, but when he hears about the serial murders, he heads to the city to investigate. Normally, he wouldn't bother, but there's something different about this case— Near may be in more danger than he realizes.
Not that Mello actually cares. That would be ridiculous.
