We’re children, B wished he could retort. But it wouldn’t solve anything to say that. Such a defense would be considered blasphemy here, since IQ tests holding promising results had been done on all the children participating in the successor program. However, “participating” wasn’t quite the right word. Sure, you could always choose if you wanted to join or not. But once you did, you weren’t allowed to leave.

Successors, labeled Alternative and Backup, A and B, just to follow my title and positioning.” Beyond scoffed, folding his arms and leaning back in the chair while shutting his eyes. If the world’s greatest detective was going to sit like that in front of them barefoot, B doubted he would be scolded for leaning back this way.
“Imagine how we feel.”
“I do.”

“Watari, I have a secret,” L chokes out through a teary voice and shaky sniffles.
Watari quirks an eyebrow, and decides to question further. Whatever it is, it’s bothering L enough to bring him to tears.
“What might that be?”
“I’m a monster.” The little boy sobs, curling in on himself. L sounds so sure of himself, as always. Watari finds himself hoping L is wrong, just for this.

Summary
What if, instead of killing Light when Near defeated him, Ryuk sent him back to the past?
Light had been attracted to L the moment he saw the detective. The killer thought the other man was hot, even though he was always exhausted and emotionless. However, he was in his way, and Light had to kill him. Though he didn’t kill him himself.
Then, Near came. The white haired boy reminded Light of L with every movement he made: the way he walked, the way he spoke, the way he sat, the manias he had,… but there were two problems; Near was his enemy, and he was in love with the late Mello and the late Matt.
Finally, Near defeated him, and Light was about to get killed by Ryuk. However, the Shinigami offered him a deal. Light traveled to the past but he had to give up the Death Note. That excited Light, who instantly accepted.
But now…what was he supposed to do, now that he was back not before he picked the Death Note up, but the moment of Near’s birth, being a five years old himself? And why was a thirteen years old L sitting next to him?
