Summary
Harrowhark Nonagesimus knelt in the Ninth House library and recited the confessional for the sixth time in a row. Usually she recited it in groups of three, three times daily, for a total of nine, but she was about to commit a sin and figured she ought to recite it an extra nine times. Six recitations in, though, and she found the words meant so little to her that she wasn’t sure she should’ve bothered. She didn’t feel guilty about this sin, not really. Certainly not the way she felt guilty about everything else.

Harrowhark Nonagesimus, the one and only surviving child of the Duke of Drearburh, played the part of heiress quite well. In any appearance she made in public (although there were not very many), she was as proper as they come, a true testament to the excellence of the Nonagesimus lineage, a credit to her family line. It is what she must be, and therefore, it is what she was. A perfect daughter, and soon to be a perfect bride.
Though, if we’re being completely transparent, bride is not at all what Harrowhark wished to be.

Gideon Nav stood in the rain. The scratchy black suit top felt too constricting; she wished she could have had it tailored to accommodate her arms better. There just wasn’t enough time. She shifted the burgundy umbrella to her off hand, fidgeting with the hem of her jacket as the rain pattered against the vinyl and dripped around her.
It seemed fitting; like the sky was crying all the tears she couldn’t bring herself to produce. She didn’t pay attention to the priest’s words. She rarely did; a habit that earned her endless lectures in her childhood. Instead, her gaze drifted to the closed casket beneath the tarp, ready to be lowered into the grave below. It didn’t seem right. She always assumed her mentor would simply fade into the house itself someday; to watch over the next generation of kids as a gargoyle statue in the foyer. Somehow, she never pictured death to feel so final.

Gideon gently grabbed one of Harrow’s hands and traced it, “You don’t have to go back. You’re out. There’s absolutely nothing forcing you to go.”
Harrow pushed away and laid flat on her back, eyes closed tightly. “That just…isn’t an option. I have to go back and help them.” She laughed sardonically, “I’ll probably be the last one to die there and then the entire planet will crumble because there isn’t anyone left to fix anything anymore.”
