Something’s up with Nick.
Over the last few years I’ve become pretty good at reading him, peeking behind the Rugby King Nick Nelson mask he likes to put up. He does it around me sometimes too but not as often as he used to. But today, he’s got that wall up pretty high. He just keeps looking at me like he’s not sure I’m real anymore. A part of me wonders if I died and now I’m some unknowing ghost like Bruce Willis in the Sixth Sense, doomed to walk the Earth until someone tells me I’m dead.
Which I’m sure Nick wouldn’t tell me, he’d feel terrible about it because that’s just how Nick is. He feels terrible if anyone, me most of all, ever looks remotely sad about anything. He sees it as a weakness, I’m sure, but Nick’s endless empathy towards people is really a good thing. As long as those people don’t take advantage of him, at least.
So yeah, Nick’s acting strange today and I’m not sure why.

Nick sighed, resting his head against Charlie’s shoulder, “I’m just tired of this. Sometimes I feel like being queer is this… it’s like a bruised knee and I can’t stop poking at it to see how much I can make it hurt. It’s so stupid, that probably doesn’t even make sense.”
“No, I get it,” Charlie replied, pressing a kiss to the top of Nick’s head, “I used to sit there for hours and read articles about homophobic hate crimes just to… I don’t know. Like, test myself, I guess.”
“Sometimes I feel like I’m faking it,” Nick admitted, “When I’m with you, it feels so real and then when I’m alone there’s this voice in my head telling me that I’m doing it for attention. Which is ridiculous because nobody but you and our friends even know, so it’s not like I’m getting attention for it.”
“Well,” Charlie replied, “I can’t stop that voice in your head but I can tell you that you are not faking it. But you’re also not being ridiculous. Lots of people struggle with imposter syndrome, and I know that’s a really difficult thing to cope with.”
Nick nodded, head still tucked against his boyfriend’s chest, “Sometimes it’s just like, fighting with my brain feels like a losing battle.”
