Iceman turned around so that they were face to face, mere inches apart. “You left.”
One look at his face set Maverick on edge, the snarky jab he had carefully prepared immediately lost. His skin was too pale, littered with the purples and blues that matched his own from those short few months ago. His eyes, though sunken, were just as blue as the kind of skies pilots dreamed of, stretching endlessly in every direction without a cloud to be seen. But there was something heavy being carried in his eyes. It was unnerving. Something had happened while he was gone.

“The beacons appear to have malfunctioned, or, at least, three of them have. The one beacon never activated at all.”
“And the dye?” Jester persevered.
“At this point, it’s been hours, sir. The dye will be present but so diluted and dispersed it won’t be a very accurate location tool, especially as the sun starts getting lower in the sky.”
The two Top Gun instructors exchanged dark looks before turning back to the serviceman in front of them.
