The gratitude on Goose’s face is as heartbreaking as the surprise and hidden distrust on Maverick’s. Looks like he’ll still have to work to convince Maverick, at least.
A cocky grin spreads over Maverick’s face as he pushes down all his insecurities and puts down the great big stick on his shoulder for a minute. “Bullshit — you can be mine.”
I've written a story before where Maverick is thrown back into the past and is able to save Goose and have a happy ending. I decided I wanted Tom to be put in a similar scenario, and thus this story came about. I'm still working the ending, but I'm enjoying the journey while I do so.

When Ice faints after landing on the tarmac and doesn’t seem be getting any better he undergoes a series of tests and gets diagnosed with invisible illness called POTS and Maverick and Slider have to help him deal with the sudden sickness and diagnosis of it. I saw the prompt “Helpless” for Day 1 of Febuwhump and decided in this. I have POTS and randomly felt like doing a fic where I use it as an angsty topic. It’s lots of angst and suffering for Iceman but Maverick is great toward him and Slider helps too sometimes.

I kept having this scenario pop up in my head -- there are a lot of fics where Maverick is attacked once Goose isn't with him. But what if some bullies decide that Goose should be used to punish Maverick? And so this little drabble happened.
Also, in the process of this snippet, the other Fly Boy's realize how much Pete cares for Nick - it's Maverick and Goose against the world!
