Maxwell joked about it during one of his weekly phone calls to Van, “Dancing is kinda like boxing, except I'm supposed to telegraph everything”. A year later he’d make a similar comment to her, “Leading is all about communicating to your follow what you’re going to be doing next”.
Van asked, “So each choreographed segment has a specific start to it?”
She heard the frown over the phone. “No… okay yes, but not quite."

I’d always see you the days after Vanellope taught you something new, or fixed something, you would practice it over and over to make sure you got it into your muscle memory,” Bert smiled.
He loved to see Maxwell so determined. He was so closed off when they first met him. Maxwell Gotch was the most “put-together” 14 year old Bert had ever seen, knocking on the front door of Van’s boxing gym asking if he could work there.

Maxwell opened the box. First, Maxwell noticed the revolving cylinder. The box was, in fact, a music box but it was odd. The cylinder wasn’t a solid steel cylinder with specific pins raised up... well it was, but it was very clear that every section of surface area on the cylinder could be pushed out as a pin if necessary. Each square on the cylinder could be switched on or off somehow, allowing the box to play multiple songs.
Maxwell set back to the table he and Torse had commandeered for the day. Maxwell couldn’t be sure that the music box was Zernian, but he knew he wanted to share it with Torse regardless.Series

Torse sat with her request in his mind. He was not made for building anything, especially a marriage, but it didn’t sound like Maxwell actually needed someone to build a life with. Maxwell needed a protector, a warrior who could and would get their hands dirty. This would help Zern’s relations with Gath, and Torse would have a purpose again.

The first time Torse properly met Maxwell Gotch, was also when they signed their Gathie Marriage paperwork. He was broad, in a dark red, well-fitting suit, wearing pristine gloves. Maxwell’s blue eyes lingered on Torse’s spikes and blades. He hadn’t had the time, nor any care to properly clean his blades since the war ended but now felt viscerally aware of the blood, oil, and general grime on him.
