The closest he got was once every hundred years in the White Horse, chatting with his Stranger, his mysterious man who is not a Man.
Yes, sure, he’s an immortal man from the 1300’s, but he spends his days with the worst and best of humanity. He doesn’t need to add demons and magic to the mix for him to find wonder and sorrow all on his own. He still has so much of the mundane to explore- to live for. Maybe, he always thought, he would get bored and start exploring the supernatural that seemed more his Stranger’s purview than his own. Perhaps in a few hundred more years.
Pity, then, that the supernatural came to him.

Roderick Burgess is horrified at the indignity and pain his son has suffered and is willing to do anything to bring him peace, including meddling in powers beyond his understanding. Power corrupts, and when the Magus misses his target, his original aim is twisted and lost as he settles into the self-aggrandising effect of Dream's tools.
Randall is forgotten by the wayside and finds a strange comaraderie with the being locked up beyond his reach. He couldn't imagine they had more in common than simply being trapped, much less anything that could be the key to both of them escaping their respective cages.

Summary
Hob has been around death. Living in London throughout multiple plague outbreaks and fires, as well as making a living soldiering and dabbling in banditry, will do that to you. What he doesn't know is that Death has been around Hob as well. He has no idea that when his Stranger left him that night in 1389 after their first meeting, the woman who came up to him, laid a hand on his shoulder and said, “Good luck, friend,” was Death incarnate.
Hob doesn’t know that he is one of few things in this world that has been Touched by Death and lived. Had he known this, he might not have been as confused as he is when his body slams into the floor of a dim, candle-lit cellar and he finds himself surrounded by hooded figures and a gold circle on the floor. That is all he manages to perceive before everything goes blurry and consciousness slips away from him again.
Here in the Darkness.
