Roderick Burgess kidnaps Hob Gadling on June 7, 1989, intending to break both him and Dream. Instead, Dream being rather aggressively tortured triggers the knowledge of Hob's identity as Hope of the Endless, wrapped away in a mental box as they had been.

Once Dream is tended to, a kettle of tea on, Hob – he's Hob again, he thinks, though he's also still Hope, but he's not winged and glowing anymore – slumps next to the bed in a chair.
This is … extremely not how he'd thought the week would be going. Two days ago he had simply been the immortal Hob Gadling. Dream starts mumbling something in unconsciousness, delirious.

His Stranger frowns. “Find flaws in yourself?”
“No.” The bastard, Hob thinks, impossibly, dangerously fond. “I could go. As your date.” He clears his throat. Too late to back out. “Pretend to be.”
“You jest.”
“I’m not. We’re strangers, right? If this goes south – you’ve got nothing to lose.” Chattering to cover up, and covering up to dig an even deeper grave. That, apparently, is Hob’s specialty. He shrugs, and hides his twisted smile behind the bouquet he’s tying up. “There’re a million other florists in London.”

While he's sleeping he has an incredibly vivid dream where he finds himself down in the basement with their captive; {…} Even though the intact binding circle prevents there from being any strength in it, the creature snarls and ineffectually tries to shove away Alex's groping hands, scratching his nails down his arm as he does. When Alex jolts awake to find the same scratches on his arm, he does a bit of reconstruction and figures out that the spot he picked for his illicit nap happened to be located directly above the spot in the basement where the glass cage was suspended. He can't get the experience out of his mind, quickly becoming obsessed with the thought of doing it again, of doing...more. So, he prepares, carefully waits for the right opportunity, and he does.”

[In which the funeral of Roderick Burgess draws unlikely guests, Robert Gadling is stalked by a nightmare, an imprisonment is cut short, past wounds begin to heal, and old friends find solace with one another.]
Over a decade into his capture, Dream’s thoughts torture him as he longs for freedom from the cruel prison he has been trapped in. The death of Roderick Burgess brings unexpected promise and danger, however, as Hob Gadling is summoned to the funeral and finds himself catching the attention of a mysterious figure in dark glasses, unaware of his friend's captivity or the danger the nightmare poses. But when a chance conversation overheard in a nearby tavern leads Hob to fear the worst, the Corinthian makes him a suspicious offer regarding the being below Fawney Rig, dragging him into a deadly plot that means to break Dream’s spirit and accomplish what Burgess could not. Naturally, things do not go to plan, and the healing in the aftermath is not something they can accomplish alone.
