Carl's hand pawed at his gun holster, but it came up empty. His head snapped down in surprise, did he drop it while running? Was it maybe on the forest floor? How did he even get here?
He fell to his knees and ran his hands through the grass, his frantic searching tearing up clumps of dirt.
The snap of a branch startled him and his eye scanned the surrounding forest. He made his way into a crouch and kept his gaze in front of him. His gun wasn't here and his knife was god knows where, he was useless, injured, and alone without a weapon. Another branch cracked closer this time, and as he was backing away a small throwing knife whipped past his face, missing him by a mere centimetre. Carl took this as his sign to bolt. He turned and sprinted as fast as his sore legs could take him, being careful to not trip on any roots or rocks this time.

What kind of person does that? She knows the answer of course. Guardians do, when their fated fellows refuse to come home and fulfill their destiny, but that doesn't make it any better.
Yet she doesn't know how much longer they can wait, not when their third is right there, completely oblivious to their shared destiny. Acorn can only hope they don't have to entertain this madness much longer, but that will only happen when Rue comes home to she and Anathra's waiting embrace and that is looking less likely by the day. A Guardians life is one of trials, and this is by far the hardest the Guardians of Spruce have faced yet.

It’s just too bad Snow decided Katniss needed to figure out what that meant on her own.
