[Monday morning, Penny met the group at a law office in downtown Pasadena.
The lawyer, a sharp-eyed woman named Patricia Smith whom Howard had found through a recommendation, looked at them over her glasses with barely concealed curiosity.
"So," she said slowly, "you five want to claim a lottery jackpot of $847 million, split equally, and you want to do it anonymously through a trust."
"That's correct," Sheldon said.
"And you want separate trusts for each person, plus a shared trust for joint expenses and investments."
"Also correct."
Patricia leaned back in her chair. "May I ask how you all know each other?"
"We're friends," Bernadette said simply. "We've known each other for years."
It wasn't technically a lie. They had known each other for years, just not in this timeline.
Patricia studied them for a long moment, then nodded. "All right. I can make this work. But I need to be clear about something: once this money is claimed, your lives are going to change. Dramatically. Even with anonymity protections, people will notice. Family, friends, coworkers. You need to be prepared for that."
"We're prepared," Howard said.
"And you're sure you want to split it five ways? No disputes about percentages or..."
"We're sure," Raj said firmly. "Equal shares. No arguments."
Patricia smiled slightly. "You're either the best friends in the world or the most naive. I'm hoping it's the former."
"It is," Penny said. "Trust me."
The paperwork took three hours. Signatures and initials and legal jargon that made Penny's head spin. But finally, it was done.
"The funds will be transferred within seventy-two hours," Patricia said. "I'll set up the trusts and handle all the tax implications. You'll each receive a detailed breakdown of your assets and investment options. And if anyone asks, you inherited money from a distant relative. Understood?"
"Understood," they chorused.
Outside the office, they stood on the sidewalk in stunned silence.
"We actually did it," Bernadette whispered.
"We actually did it," Howard echoed.
Sheldon pulled out his phone and checked his calculator app. "After taxes and legal fees, we're each looking at approximately $135 million."]
[Outside, in the parking lot, Bernie turned to her friend. "So. What did you see?"
"What do you mean?"
"Tara. You're a psychologist. You were watching him all night. What did you see?"
Tara considered her words carefully. "I saw someone who's very good at performing concern and interest. Someone whose attention shifts immediately when a new opportunity presents itself. And I saw a group of people who are very carefully managing their reactions around him."
Bernie's shoulders sagged slightly. "So you see it."
"I see something. And Bernie, whatever's going on, be careful. Document everything."
"We are," Bernie said quietly. "We are."
Tara drove home, her mind racing. She pulled out her phone at a red light and opened her notes app.
Subject: Leonard Hofstadter
