“It’s only an exchange if you agree to it, and you are of course free to refuse. My Lady insists you not feel obligated to provide anything in return,” the butler’s eyes narrow at Goro, “since it is a bit of a controversial case…”
The shift in Akira’s tone piques Goro’s interest, and he tries not to let a reaction show on his face. Though he’s sure Kurusu’s seen right through him when he lets the butler continue.
“However, I personally believe you will take an interest in it,” Kurusu adds with a glint in his eye, “assuming you take integrity in your occupation”.

"So, you built a shrine for me. You also wished for me . . . I cannot understand your motivations at all," said Akechi. "Your excessive goodwill for a man who tried to kill you is something I cannot comprehend." His tone was rough yet deliberate.
"I've been so busy for the last few years that I forgot how it felt to have nothing to do. I realized I was trapped in a paradise of your creation — I suppose it should have been obvious. While you were gone, I wandered around idly while I received worship I didn't earn. It might have felt nice if they were real, but those shadows were created by you. I was created by you."
The cognitive Akechi looked back to Akira, who had forgotten Akechi was cognitive for a long moment. Only a light steam separated them. To Akira's surprise, the cognitive Akechi didn't sound disgusted about being stuck in Akira's palace, even though the real Akechi had been disgusted in Maruki's reality. This Akechi sounded somewhat aggrieved, yet unangry.
Akira Kurusu has a palace, and it's a shrine for Goro Akechi.

Ren stares at the light-up dartboard. "This is our rematch?"
"Indeed." Akechi turns and levels a serious look at him. "Do you have a problem with that?"
There are many problems with it. "I thought you meant, like, in the Metaverse," Ren says. "Like we were going to go beat each other up."
"Well." Akechi flips his hair out of his eyes and opens up a fancy little case with his fancy little darts that let him somehow always throw bullseyes. "That's your fault for making the wrong assumption, isn't it?"
"It's your fault for being evasive and unclear," Ren argues. Rather futilely, but it's the thought that counts.
Akechi's eyes dance under the fluorescent lights—oh, Ren's definitely being laughed at now. "701. First to zero wins. I'll even be a good sport and let you go first."

The room is silent for a brief moment. Akira’s eyes are desperate, searching Goro’s face for some sort of hint, something that would give him an answer. His mouth is slightly open, his fists balled up at his sides. Goro doesn’t answer him. He just stares back, a blank expression on his face. His eyes are dead, so dead. Akira can barely stand to look at them anymore, but he can’t look away either. He’s trapped.
“You know the answer to that, Akira,” Goro finally answers, voice steady as can be.
Or, the ficlet where Akira and Goro fight and Goro runs away. Akira is left to deal with his own emotions, and we see the aftermath of their argument.
