The tires screech, and suddenly, the car’s drifting and sliding all over the road. A quick, automatic glance in the side mirror—and yep, there’s a car right behind them, way too close, like way too close. It’s probably about to hit them, right? But… no crash. Instead, there’s this honk, sharp and totally freaked out, like the car’s about to lose it. Weird, right? Honking’s not exactly known for emotional breakdowns, but whatever. Then the car slams to a stop, and Miles gets whipped back into the seat, the one he’d just been thrown forward in, held back only by the seatbelt. Just barely—he’s talking milliseconds away—from turning his head, losing his cool, and shouting, “What the fuck?!” while throwing a punch at the guy sitting next to him.

It’s the car and the fact that she’s a month behind on her rent and the shitty ex boyfriend and the fact that she’s all alone in a tiny little town, the kind of town she swore she’d never end up in. It’s the fact that she has no friends and no family, and that she’s basically starting over at 30 fucking years old, sleeping on a mattress on the floor and applying for every job she can find.
Somehow, though, she channels all of her frustration into hatred for her car, and she’s pounding on the wheel and screaming like a crazy person when possibly the hottest person she’s ever seen in her life walks up to her door and raises an eyebrow at her.
“Um,” she says, rolling down her window and grimacing as the man stares at her with his eyebrow raised. “My car broke down.”
