      Ratthi steals another glance at the ceiling.

      He desperately wants to know how the two met. (Not at the expense of SecUnit’s privacy; he’s hoping one day it will share.) However long ago they’d crossed paths, their relationship—no, SecUnit had called it mutual administrative assistance—has progressed to the point where Perihelion trusts SecUnit with its life; where SecUnit, who is wary of trust, feels safe starting a fight with someone it’s named Asshole Research Transport immediately upon waking up in Medical.

      Ratthi tilts his head, considering what he knows about his friend, its media habits, and the little he’s gleaned about its past. SecUnit seems to categorize relationships mostly as human things; the existence of whatever it has with Perihelion challenges that paradigm. (Because that’s the only frame of reference it’s had, not because machine intelligences don’t already have social norms. He’s loath to make the same mistake of assuming human things about them.) Which is new, and potentially scary, to someone who’s relied on knowing its place in the world to survive.
