After Crow and Dr. Doyle had signed the registration papers that required them to remain in proximity at all times under threat of arrest, Crow started to act in a way that worried Doyle. Doyle had emphatically told Crow long ago that he neither wanted a wife nor to be one, but he now saw Crow doing all of the things that they had discussed wives doing and that Crow had seen wives doing for their husbands: making sure Doyle had something to eat for tea that he liked, reminding him to wear his galoshes, and mending his clothing for him.

Well, Doyle had been forced, and Crow could not bear to see him signed over to the mercies of someone who might be less scrupulous, someone who might be unkind over the requirement that Doyle stay by the other signatory's sight. It was, after all, something of a marriage. They knew and protected each other's secrets and safety: Crow's building block that kept him named and not Nameless, Doyle's sex that had previously prevented him from considering marriage.
