Mari and Hero left Faraway to go to university, but Sunny’s friends stopped hanging out with him for no reason.
Even at home, he almost felt invisible — to the point where he had to cook and work for himself just to get what he wanted.One day, he bought chocolate then Sunny went to buy a new comic in his birthday. On the way, he saw his friends together, heading toward their secret spot — with other people. He felt like he was being replaced.
Sunny’s eyes began to tear up a little, but then someone bumped into him from behind.
It was Kim and her group, running from a store after stealing candy.Sunny got a little scared, remembering how Mari once told him not to hang out with people like them. But that didn’t seem to matter anymore, not after Mari had broken her promise to be with him forever.
They hid behind one of the cars, and when Miss Smiley asked Sunny where they went, he pointed in the opposite direction.
After she left, Kim and her friends came out of hiding. They didn’t recognize him at first — until Kim said,“Sunny???"

The train to Faraway Town was announced, as well as the boarding track, and only Sunny, his mom, and a few other people went down the stairs. It seemed no one wanted to go to sleepy, slow suburbia, where it was a given to know the name of at least all the people on your block, the cashiers knew you on a first name basis, and people were careful not to mow their lawns before 10:00 am on Sundays because they knew the elderly couple down the street was sleeping in.

Summary
Sunny Suzuki, despite having too much on his plate already, had told his friends the truth about Mari's death, lost his right eye in his fight with Basil, lost all of his friends, and spent his sixteenth and seventeenth birthdays in a doctor's office. Not to mention, the effect that everything prior had on his mental and emotional health is starting to become frighteningly apparent. Now, he's 17 1/2, living in a busy apartment, surrounded by exhausting traffic, rude classmates, and an overworked mother.
That is until he answers a call from Kel for the first time since he left; he finds himself diving into a spark of determination to fix his broken relationship with his old friends and make things right again.
AKA, he takes a trip to Faraway during most of his winter break (1 week, 12/26 - 1/2) with Kel, Hero, Aubrey, and Basil. He spends New Year's with them.

Wrestling with a mess of feelings for a boy he used to sneak out to Hobbeez with, it'll take seven memories and a whole lot of maybes for Sunny to see this hopeless romantic's love story through to completion.
