“Why?” He asks before he can stop himself. “Why were you so…” He tries to think of a better word, a more sophisticated word, something that makes him sound less like a lost child pleading with his mother, but there’s only one word that comes. “So mean to me?”
She’s so close he can hear each unsteady breath she takes before replying. “Everyone I cared about was being used against me. Caring was weakness, and any weakness would be exploited. Mercilessly.”
A laugh slips out against his will. “Sounds familiar.”
It hurts her, he knows. She draws back, and he should be pleased, but the problem is, hurting her hurts him, too. Even now. Even after everything, he doesn’t want her to suffer. But she goes back only a step; no further. “If Rossum suspected I didn’t have full control of you, that you were anything less than loyal to them, they’d have sent you to the Attic.” He shudders. “And if they’d suspected me of disloyalty, you’d have been the first they questioned.”
“I’d have lied for you.”
“And they’d have tortured you until you told the truth, or died. Neither of those were options.” There’s, at last, a trace of the firmness he’s come to expect from her. “So I had to find another way to keep you out of Rossum’s interest. Besides, your hurt lent credibility to my own turnaround; if I would choose them over you, I’d choose them over anyone.”

Topher's life, his thoughts, his abilities, and his very existence have all been building to this one moment. He doesn't know how to stop the chain of events that he's unwittingly triggered, he doesn't think that it's even possible.
But, maybe he can take himself out of the equation and still get something that he wants in the process. -
