Phil has settled in as a professor of Phonetics and Phonology at the University of Manchester, teaching the toughest first-year module on the Law and Linguistics BA programme and coordinator of the linguistics research group. She loves her job. When the faculty hires the hyperactive, high-strung, slightly arrogant Danielle Howell as their new adjunct law professor, Phil isn't too impressed. The excitable creatures never last - even if they are hot, and funny, and good at their jobs.
Dan has ended up back in Manchester, for some fucking reason. Her career practicing law didn't exactly go as planned, and now she's returned to her old university to teach a basic evidences and procedures course that is, quite frankly, below her. But the money is good, and Manchester is cheaper than London. She's alone and spends the evenings phoning her grandmother and thinking about the past. At her new job, there's this woman who seems to be unfazed by her usual antics - a linguist named Philomena Lester. And Dan kind of can't stop thinking about her. Great. Now what?

"How did you realize you were a girl?" Phil asks, one morning, out of nowhere. He's curled up in the corner of the couch, laptop balanced sideways on his knees, noodling away at a script for a project he won't be starting work on for months. Danielle is on her way back to the other end of the couch, a fresh mug of coffee in hand. She stops.
"What?"
"You just– you seem like you figured it out so fast," Phil stammers, fidgeting with the USB dongle plugged into his laptop for his wireless mouse. The indicator light on it flickers on and off, blue and searing bright into his still-tired eyes.
"Twenty-seven years isn't exactly fast, Phil."

Daniel Howell has always been fascinated about the horns growing out of his head. He doesn't know exactly when they sprouted, but they've been there for as long as he can remember. He can't pull them off, and it hurts when he pulls on them too hard. He's tried to cover them up with his hair, but no use.
Phil Lester is the coolest guy he knows-- which isn't saying a lot considering he doesn't know a lot of other people. Phil has horns too, but he's not as afraid to show them off.
Dan hopes she'll be as confident as Phil one day.
