      Even the circlet currently radiating a gentle chill against Twilight’s forehead can only do so much.

      And for another thing, when they finally do reach Gerudo Town, Wild tells them that they can’t go inside.

      “They don’t allow men in,” he says apologetically. “I’ve got a trick, and I can probably take someone with me, but everyone else will have to wait out here until I can talk to Riju.”

      That gets a chorus of groans, lightened only when Wild passes out a few hydromelons to make sure they don’t get heat stroke during the wait.

      “Honestly gender is - it’s weird, for them,” Wild says with a wave of his hands. “It’s more about presentation, so dressing like this is enough to get you in. I have an extra, but… you know, if you’re not comfortable with it…”

      Wild beams - his eyes crinkle at the corners - and takes out another outfit with another few taps of the slate. This one is green rather than blue.

      Twilight honestly doesn’t know how he feels about the outfit once it’s on. He’s not overheating anymore, which is good, and a quick sniff of the fabric reveals the sharp smell of cooling magic woven into it. Handy. But the fact that he feels very exposed is… interesting.

      “What do you think?” Wild asks, helping him adjust the veil.

      “… I don’t know,” he admits, brushing a hand over one of the sleeves. The texture is nice. “I don’t think I’ll mind wearing it long enough to get in and talk to Riju, anyway.”

      Wild nods a few times, and some tension drops from his shoulders. “Good. I don’t want you to be uncomfortable. It’s… I mean, I don’t mind being a vai for a bit, or the outfit, but I know not everyone - It’s sort of - yeah.”

      “Vai?”

      “Sort of…” Wild trails off and makes a sort of rolling gesture with his hand. “The closest translation we have in Hylian would be woman, I think, but that isn’t all there is to it. It’s more of… Well, you’ll see once we’re in, I think.”

      Riju gives him an approving nod back, then looks back to Wild. “And Link, do show your new vai around.”

      Twilight blinks. “New vai?”

      “A conversation for the two of you.” Riju makes a playful little shooing motion. “For now, you have some friends to get out of the sun.”

      “Oh, right - bye, Riju!” Wild takes Twilight’s hand again and leads him back out into the bazaar.

      “What did she mean new vai?” Twilight asks, ducking around a support pole for an awning.

      Wild shrugs. “She knows people sometimes dress as vai to get into the town. She saw right through me the first time I did it, and she called me a new vai, too.”

      “So, Twilight’s figured out he likes being a vai sometimes, and we decided he can wear that bracer to tell us when it’s a vai day.”[...]“You can just… do that?” Hyrule says slowly. It doesn’t sound like condemnation, it sounds more… hopeful.

      “Sure you can,” Legend says with a shrug. Twilight blinks and looks closer, and - that’s tension in Legend’s shoulders, a stiff sort of discomfort. “Gender is fake, you can do whatever you want. I certainly do.”

      “Really?” Wild asks with a blink and a growing smile.

      Legend crosses his arms and raises an eyebrow. “Yeah. There a problem with that?”

      “Since my gender is scraps of things I found on the side of the road and thought were cool, no!” Wild chirps.

      Time chuckles and runs his thumb back and forth over Twilight’s knuckles. “Apparently there are more of us with complicated genders than we initially thought.”[...]Four makes a so-so gesture. “Not uncomfortable, per se? I don’t know, gender’s a little strange for me. People usually default to he/him and that’s generally fine.”

      “Just generally?” Time asks with a slight frown.

      “I’d rather not go into the specifics, it’s… tied in with my adventure,” Four says lightly, and the rest of the group nods or winces in sympathy. They all understand adventures that uproot your sense of self, and the desire not to share them. “If any of you make me uncomfortable, though, I’ll tell you.” (Four, on the inside: I do NOT feel like explaining that there's four of us in here!)

      I commented the prev thing and the author replied with "Four, who could very comfortably go by plural they/them: Don't ask me about my gender I will Not explain. Wouldn't you like to know weather boy"

      I feel the need to gratefully swim around this fic like a fish that has just been put back into water because FINALLY someone else talks the possibility that gender is just closely tied to presentation for the Gerudo. Good take. A+

       

      GENDER AS PRESENTATION FOR THE GERUDO I just. Mmmmm I have thoughts about that and most of them have to do with the fact that you can change clothes in front of the guards and they will treat you as the opposite gender no questions asked
