Summary
God didn’t make the stars, but he stole their light. He made such a beautiful thing so ugly, and he called it righteous so no one could disagree. It makes you so upset, and you just want to steal it back. You want to take that light and be whole.

You know they want you to be like that, even though you don’t know why, even though you know it’s stupid and unfair and you shouldn’t have to, you should never have had to. There isn’t much to do but play along, and you know that. You hate it so much, and you don’t want to be strong, you don’t want to need to be. But your fate was written before you were even born, and there’s nothing that feels more unfair than that.
You’re not like them, not like any single one of them. You aren’t beautiful, and you aren’t right. There’s something messed up deep inside you that can’t be fixed and can’t be cured, and you think it’s obvious what will happen.
___
You don’t like looking in mirrors. Your eyes are drawn instantly to every unsightly piece of your body, every tiny detail that bothers you and nips at the back of your mind as the heat of summer pours down at you. Your hair is too short, your jaw is too square, your shoulders are too broad, and you’re too tall, and your facial hair grows back too fast and it leaves too much even when you shave it, and the hair on your arms and legs does too, and you smell wrong- somehow, you can even smell wrong. But you’re made in God’s image, so you must be beautiful. God doesn’t make mistakes, so you must be a boy. Your parents told you that, and then they sent you here. That’s what speaking up gets you.
In the creaky bunk beds of the cabin you dream of a radiant light that evaporates everything, that dissolves perception itself into a vague dream of a shape. You dream of feathered wings with eyes that see the truth, and a body that God would hate. You want to take God’s image and you want to destroy it, desecrate it until it becomes beautiful. You want to feel the comfort of a body drenched in the warmth of a light that God didn’t make. You want to bathe in the light that made the universe, the light God stole, and the light he used to make you, to make this awful body that feels so wrong. God didn’t make the stars, but he stole their light. He made such a beautiful thing so ugly, and he called it righteous so no one could disagree. It makes you so upset, and you just want to steal it back. You want to take that light and be whole.
